UPDATED! Last Saturday at around 3 PM two motorcyclists, one aged 26 the other 29, were driving at excessive speed, passing other motorists illegally. One of the motorists eventually called the police. The riders got intercepted pretty quickly near the police station of Wakefield in Outaouais. One of the riders tried to get his helmet camera hidden but failed to do so and got taken for proof. This is what they saw partially (just click on the vid).

http://tvanouvelles.ca/lcn/infos/fait…

The 26 yrs old male had 21 tickets handed out for a mind blowing 116 demerit points (an unrestricted license have only 15 points allowed before it's revoked) which will cost him 11 268$!

The 29 yrs old male had also 21 tickets but only 113 demerit points and it will cost him 10 968$

Update: They are facing criminal charges and they actually tried to deal with the cops so that they leave them with their license for work reasons. Needless to say...it didn't work. They were travelling between 150-200 km/h.

Here in Quebec, they give back 15 points each 2 years and a big excessive speed ticket leaves your record with a mark that stains it for 10 years even if you have all your points back. After checking out the SAAQ, I found out that the license will be revoked for 1 year. Thanks for the heads up !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Wow. Multiple passes over a double yellow in a construction zone, driving into oncoming traffic, passing multiple cars, and excessive speeding, just in that short clip alone!

That's bizarre. Does Quebec not have any criminal laws for dangerous driving? You don't normally hear about lists of offences like that because anything that serious is considered one ongoing criminal offence rather than a series of separate minor traffic offences.

Normally, that's how it works: get in a police chase and you'll go to jail, but you won't get speeding tickets.

Nope, no jail. You get your vehicle impounded, you lose your license on site and get handed out the tickets. I think they didn't resist, that's part of the reason they didn't get thrown to jail.

I must say, it was quite the spectacle. I was waiting for karma to step in instead of the cops.

However, what I can't take serious is the term "demerit points" because demerit just sounds like high school all over again. Makes me think they're just going to get a day in detention and then be free to go.

Canada sounds nice even when they're trying to be mean...

The amount of points and fines sounds dramatic but this will go to court and will be greatly reduced. Not enough for those two to keep their licenses or be able to ride/drive any time soon but I bet it will go down to about 30 points each.
If you care about your license points in Quebec you always pay a lawyer to at least negotiate the ticket. It's about $100 per point for normal offences (2 or 3 points for speeding under 45 km/h over or stop signs and lights).

On top of that, it seems unfair that these guys should get such an excessive punishment simply because they happened to record it. If they hadn't recorded it, they could only have been sentenced for a few of those, and unlikely enough to ban them from riding.
What does this tell idiot riders? You can still do whatever the fuck you want, just don't record it...

On top of that, it seems completely out of proportion. A 200kg isn't going to cause that much damage to anything else in a highway collision, not like pedestrians were being put at risk.

As someone who lives 40 miles from the Quebec border I can tell you this driving style isnt exclusive to these riders. Every weekend the Quebec'ers make their pilgrimage south(especially now that our foliage is at peak) and apparently speed limits are suggestions to these people. The plus side is, as long as you dont record it and get caught, driving to Montreal is kinda like being on the Autobahn lol.

This might go through as a probable cause search. If witnesses reported a camera or the policeman saw it before it was put away then the seizure is legal. It's all about how the police came to the knowledge of the camera. If they just guessed that the riders had one and strip searched them the defence would fight the evidence gathered from the camera. It is nothing to do with Quebec being special.
Ontario is even more special regarding idiotic laws suspending due process on the roads. Instant vehicle seizures for simply chirping the tires with the cop being the judge are a bit absurd. Ontario's top cop (Fantino) was always complaining how the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was getting in his way. And Ontario people elected him as MP. I would rather vote for a corrupt thief than that buffoon.

Can I just make a point of note on the double yellow thing? (As everyone seems keen to vilify motorcyclists right now.)

Look at the video. The road is almost dead straight, with nothing coming towards them when they make the passes. There is nothing unsafe about this. No side roads, no intersections, no oncoming traffic. Whoever painted those double yellow lines needs some training about how to stripe roads because they're utterly pointless in this case.

So : technically, yes, they broke the law. No argument. Mitigating circumstances : they passed safely, with plenty of room, on a road with good sight lines and without endangering anyone.

Bear in mind that motorbikes are considerably quicker when accelerating than cars, so passes like this are quick and easy to accomplish.

Car drivers are always quick to judge motorcyclists because for the most part, we're viewed as baby-raping axe murderers thanks to the way the press deals with us. Car drivers have a knack for coming up with stupid comments when shown something like this. I'm reminded of the NYC beating and one of the comments posted there. Someone wrote this:

"If I were surrounded by motorcyclists, driving erratically, occupying all the lanes and putting me in danger, I think I'd have done the same thing."

Change a couple of words and read it again from a motorcyclists point of view:

"If I were surrounded by SUVs, driving erratically, occupying all the lanes and putting me in danger, I think I'd have done the same thing."

As the minority road-users, we deal with the above statement every day. Believe me - motorcyclists are well aware of how exposed we are, and how appallingly people drive when cocooned in mobile living rooms with heated this, air-conditioned that, and 145-speaker entertainment systems, isolated from the outside world in a two ton box riddled with blind spots with wifi access. Don't hate us because we choose to drive different vehicles - try using your eyes and seeing us, and giving us the benefit of the doubt instead of believing everything you read or see on TV.

There's definitely an intolerance lately towards bikers. Probably stemming from what happened in NYC a couple weeks ago. Lawmakers are talking about passing various legislation, and I saw a meathead hurl a padlock at a biker after he revved his engine repeatedly in the meatpacking district last week. He almost fell of his bike when it hit. But no one cared, and a couple people clapped. Last week in East Hampton, four were pulled over in the NW Harbor in a wooded backroad area where they generally like to ride fast. The riders were standing on the side of the road and the officers were inspecting the bikes. Then on the LIE sunday night, six or eight were pulled over... standing on the side of the road with their bikes being inspected. Most bikers are respectful and ride cautiously. But many of them don't. And it's become a real issue, especially when they ride in packs.

Fine them, they deserve that, but taking their drivers license for 15 years is crazy. All I saw was them pass on a double yellow and speed, it's not like they were splitting traffic or out of control. It's excessive punishment like this that will cause motorcyclists to run from the cops rather than stop. They probably could've got away if they truly had no regard for the law.

Now I know that the story is in Canada... So my first question is does Canada have a similar law to the US that an officer must directly see a misdemeanor? I. E. This would be a really simple case to have thrown out in the United States.

Defense attorney : "Officer xxzxxxx, how long were you following the defendants?"

Officer: "just a 1/2 mile or so, they stopped just after I caught up."

Attorney: "So how did you observe all of these infractions?"

Officer: "from the video camera mounted on his head"

Attorney :" so you never directly observed these infractions?

Officer: the video shows....

I could go on for a while back and forth but you should get my meaning of all of this... At some point in time the defense attorney is going to request that the video be suppressed as prior bad acts. So the only portion of the video that can remain in evidence is what the officers directly observed.

So the only portion of the video that can remain in evidence is what the officers directly observed.

well we only get to see a few seconds of the video. It is not excessive at all. If you drive like that, you deserve to lose your license for 15 years.

I hope it was one of those wealth-based fines that areas with leading levels of human development have favored. Otherwise, it might be like getting blood out of a turnip - in this case, a particularly stupid and lucky turnip.

I'm a motorcyclist and I think the Asian driver thing is absolutely bullshit. I have ridden everyday from March to November for the past 8 years and have never noticed Asian drivers being any worse than any other race, AND I live in Toronto. Now WOMEN, don't even get me started on Women (in N America only that is, in France, the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, women drive just fine :) )

Now see, that logic immediately annoys me. Why is it that people think everything needs to be lowered to average ability. I would argue that if these motorists aren't up to the task of dealing with other traffic properly, regardless of speed, they have no place on the road. I agree with the infrastructure point though. There are certain maximums based on surface quality. Most are much higher than people think they are, but it varies drastically vehicle by vehicle.

But do drunk drivers lose their licenses for 15 years? For that matter do drunk drivers who KILL people ALWAYS lose their license for life or even for 15 years?

It's like any other crime, if they have proof to charge you with they will use it all. If you film yourself breaking they law, you are just making the job easier for the cops to charge you.

Meh. Unless Quebec has some secret laws I don't know about, this is just for show. Most of the time when something like this happens and fines this expensive are passed out, one of two things happens: court lets them make payments and gives them new restricted licenses or they just don't pay and keep driving anyway.

I guess theater is good for making people feel good though.

Nope - imho of course. Doing it on fairly empty roads is pretty safe imho even in North America (where NO drivers are "properly trained" and probably arent really expecting you to go those speeds, well above 100mph/160kph anyway)

Sorry, this is utter bullshit and a great example of why I'll never live in Canada. In the US, that video "evidence" couldn't have been used because it was obtained illegally.

And like somebody else said, it should have been a dangerous driving offense rather than a huge list of every little thing. This is just cops being assholes, because they can be.

While I can't condone what these guys did, I think the penalty is beyond extreme. IMO, they should get their passports and move the hell out of Canada. No reason to go back.

Nice to see the usual motorcycle haters here, btw.

True. The SQ and Gatineau police always seem very efficient at catching speeders in any vehicle. Bikes don't seem to get away as easily as in the US. That's why I keep telling my best friend's little brother that his high speed escape fantasies aren't gonna work.

M2m lives in Germany, so people expect people to drive this fast there. You simply behave differently when you do. I know I behave differently when I drive on a German highway. In any other country I've driven in you don't expect someone to drive 200+ kmh, in Germany you do. As a result you'll be much more defensive and cautious when changing lanes in Germany.

If motorists aren't up to the task but are on the road they are a major hazard. To themselves and to others. If this hazard is too great it's to be prevented. I imagine there are three ways to solve this; 1. Get the incompetents off the road. 2. Improve their competence or 3. Lower to average ability.

Drunk drivers SHOULD lose their licenses. Permanently. On the first offense. Driving is a privilege, not a right. If more people understood that, the roads would be a much safer place.

There are tons of bikers in Gatineau. I bought my first bike from there because it was so cheap. I was in Ottawa reading through the Auto Trader and thought it was Hull. Definitely went further than I bargained for but I got the bike I wanted at a good price.

Tsk...tsk... like running your mouth about your girl friend and her incredible felatio skills, using a cell phone or mini cam to brag about your exploits will only lead to bigger trouble.

Don't take vids, don't post kill stories or set up races on Facebook or in your favorite forum, its just that simple.
