I've been looking at 70's Ford trucks as a cool project to work on... I would love one with a 390... Or something like this with a 302 and 2WD, just to keep it simple and keep the parts cheap. I just don't really think of the 302 as a truck motor... I wonder how much it would tow...

Them's is some interesting looking mirrors :D
A friend of mine picked up a '67 Ford Ranger Camper Special for about $1500.00 a few weeks ago. It has a 390 and a 3 speed automatic with a Dana 60 rear axle. It should tow his fiberglass boat quite easily.
As for the F-100 with the 302, I'd say it should be able to tow up to 4-5,000 pounds easy enough. The thing you'll want to remember is that most of them are shod with drum brakes at all 4 corners, which can make things a bit sketchy when it comes time to bring things to a halt.

It all comes down to gearing, but the 302 equipped 70's F-150s were rated around 2000 pounds of towing IIRC. Cool trucks though. Super easy to work on and great parts availability.

Drum brakes on all 4 corners? No thanks... haha.
