Subaru will sell 400,000 cars in the US this year

If Subaru's sales continue as they have for the last 9 months the Japanese automaker will break the 400,000 sales mark for the first time since they arrived in America 50 years ago.

Year-to-date Subaru has sold 313,407 vehicles in the US. They still have three months of sales left which means they need to sell 86,593 cars total to meet the magic 400,000 number.

During the same three-month period in 2012 Subaru sold a total of 90,978 vehicles. Given that each month so far this year they've exceeded last year's sales numbers, cracking 400,000 vehicles in the US market seems like an easy victory.

While this number doesn't seem like much when you compare it to a corporation like General Motors, who sold 2.5 million cars in America last year, when stacked side-by-side with a brand like Mazda, who sold 277,046 cars in America, Subaru looks destined for great things.

Not bad for an automaker who sold 332 cars their first year in America and who according to some enthusiasts, have lost their way.

For the past 4 or 5 years, Subaru has been capacity limited. They sell every car they build and run very lean inventory.

Subaru has dramatically expanded production capacity, which is why they're able to sell 400,000 cars annually.

US-Based Manufacturing by far. The Factories are pumping them out as fast as they can. As when it comes to the Redesigned Forester, the majority are sold before they even make it to stores, once allocation is up.

My thoughts on Subaru:

I drive a 2012 Impreza. Many Subaru lovers feel that the current Impreza has turned beige, compared to prior models. I can see that point. But it's also turned more practical and more fuel efficient, while still being one of the better driving compact/economy cars.

I don't care for how the Outback has evolved from a legitimate wagon into a crossover, and how the Forester has been transformed from a semi-crossover-ish wagon into a crossover as well. But, those models are selling damn well, and their popularity enables Subaru to keep the enthusiasts happy with the relatively low-volume BRZ's and WRX's.

400,000 sales in 2013 was predicted earlier in the year, and should be no surprise to anyone who's been watching Subaru.

2012 = 336,441

2011 = 266.989

2010 = 263,820

2009 = 216,652

2008 = 187,699

2007 = 187,208

As the numbers show, Subaru had a 190k ceiling through 2008. In 2009, Subaru began adding capacity, and hit a 265k ceiling in 2011. In 2012, Subaru continued to add capacity and is now more than double their 2007-2008 sales volume.

Not bad in 5 years. Only Hyundai-Kia group is close, going from 750k in 2007 to 1.26M in 2012.

Yes, Subaru is less niche. But without the growth, there wouldn't be a BRZ, or STi. So I'm good with it. Now, where's my next-gen SVX?

So Toyota deciding its time to make fun and interesting again cars as necessary part of their growth strategy is "bullshit"...okay. Look, there are good cars that are soulless and good cars with character, you don't have to build soulless cars to build good cars, or sell a lot of them. All the big manufactures fell into the trap of mediocrity during the booming 90's because you could have sold a turd with a Toyota badge on it, or any big SUV with 3 hamsters for an engine so companies got complacent. It happens all the time, get complacent, let the new guy eat your lunch. Remember how all the domestics though the scrappy startup called Toyota was a joke? Remember how The mega giant Toyota thought the scrappy startup Hyundai was a joke? I think we are beginning to see a Subaru that is content selling "okay" cars in volume and watch the profits roll in. It 100% works, for a while, but unless they shovel that money in to R&D and new projects (which Subaru has shown reluctance to do) then you end up selling a 10 year old car with a new face and the next new guy starts to eat your lunch. You have to innovate and be passionate to remain competitive, and right now, i don't see a trend of innovation or passion in Subaru, in fact, I see a severe conservatism in FHI. Don't get me wrong, I hope they prove me wrong but they probably wont.

My car can be considered beige, but I'd like someone to point out a car with symmetrical awd, good mpg, cargo capacity, ground clearance, and car-like road manners all while costing $21k. The new Foz seems even better, and I like the interior of the new Legacy /Outback. I would have preferred they kept the Outback a wagon, but they gotta go where there's market share. I'm going to be really interested to see what happens with the new CVT in the Foz XT and if it has the longevity of the old 4EAT.

I grew up in a Subaru family. I've been driving and riding in all kinds of Subaru's since the mid 80's. I saw the brand gain recognition and respect all my life here in Canada, and I'm proud of the accomplishments of the brand, especially during their WRC golden age. But while I'm glad that more people are embracing Subaru's all-wheel-drive and legendary reliability, I don't want to see the ruggedness and rawness of the brand make way to comfort. I welcome the recent improvement in fuel economy, but I'm not very excited about things like the manual transmissions no longer being offered on the turbo Forester. I have high hopes for the next gen-WRX. November can't come soon enough.

It wouldn't surprise me. Subaru has always offered good products for the right niche. I'm not sure that they're aiming for the kind of volume that Toyota and Honda see yearly, but by setting a specific, yet realistic goal, and really know your target audience, you win by loyalty, not by volume. It's no secret that Subaru customers are very loyal, cultish, even. They're certainly doing something right.

i swear the only cars that feel as good on the road as subarus are BMWs

Not overlylight steering but very connected.

through the corners, not giving much gas= understeer

medium gas = neutral

full throttle = over steer.

its not just the awd but the entire design of the car if you ever had to drive through a pile up on the interstate its amazing how well the car handles, i threaded the needle with mine when about a dozen cars started to spin on out 95 in CT.

problems with subaru, the technology compared to other cars is now dated as far as the interior goes.

the new legacy and outback are pigs.

Power is lacking slightly.

no MT on the new XT forester = total fail.

well built reliable cars, yes a few years have some issues, a few models for a few years need the oil pick up replaced.

head gasket issues for a couple years but if you actually change the coolant when you should most people didnt get it

You just don't understand what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Also, Subaru is prepping the new WRX, was a major part of the BRZ/FR-S, is possibly the best car company when it comes to safety in crashes, and their Eyesight system just topped the new IIHS test for automatic emergency braking. It may be possible to argue that Subaru is the new Volvo thanks to their reliability and safety. Don't forget that they just launched a new AWD system called X-Mode in the 2014 Forester. At the same time, it's nice that the stereo head unit can actually be changed in nearly all Subarus still. One thing I've always enjoyed is that Subaru tries to put meaningful tech in cars as opposed to everything possible in my opinion. Subaru may appear to be conservative, but they don't follow the path of GM, Toyota, Ford, or Honda. They do their own thing. Since about 2009, they have done a great job of improving their appeal to a wider audience without alienating their core audience. You can possibly argue that the WRX alienated some of the core, but that seems to be why they are splitting it off from the main Impreza line.

Your wife couldn't be more wrong (I'll leave it up to you if you want to actually tell her that). Granted, it might have to do with the area you live in, but Subarus are viewed with high regard in states that see any kind of snow. They also have a reputation for being indestructible and basically tanks.

They won't always look great while moving about on the road, but you can also rest easy knowing that they WILL get you around on public roads. Offroad on the other hand, you will find their limitations if things get really messy, but Subarus are excellent on public roads in all weather conditions.

I've driven my parents' old Subaru Forester and my old WRX (I've since traded it in) through all kinds of snow/ice and as long as you're a competent driver, you'll be fine. It's just important to remember that while AWD is very helpful, it can't replace a good driver and it won't help when braking. Can't believe how many people think they're invincible on bad roads in bad weather just because they have all wheel drive.

I think a lot of the success of the Outback lately is due to the redesign of the 2010 from an aesthetic standpoint - never mind the increased cabin space and fuel economy.

For instance, my wife WILL NOT drive a 96-99, 00-05, 06-10 Outback because, why? They look like wagons. However, she's thrilled she'll be getting the 2013/14 at some point in the next year because it's more SUV'ish.

I currently drive a 2001 Outback Limited with a 5 speed (which is a fine car, just not particularly remarkable in any way other than the fact the clutch was so strangely unwieldy I had to get a new one put in), which replaced a 2001 Forester base with the automatic. I also regularly drive a 2013 Forester with the 5 speed, also a base model. The one I miss the most is the 01 Forester; it had tons of space but was small on the outside, good visibility from the drivers seat, comfortable, and open. All in all, a good small car with a lot of space. I would say my gripe with the new ones is that they have gotten too big, however it is pretty obvious by their sales that is the way things are going. Who will build the next small, all wheel drive, station wagon that is worth a crap as a daily driver?

Nope thats the most disappointing part. 90% of my miles were highway. I probably still have the highest fuelly average for an STI of that year (also pretty disappointing).
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/nateg20…
Basically imo subaru really dropped the ball. They changed the piston design to hypereutectic, in 07 actually, but made no other design considerations. Sure the older boxers had some of these issues, but I'd say it was a pretty normal failure rate for a perfomance minded vehicle. Most of those cases were likely as you described high boost and the car had a rough life.
Now I drive a '12 Civic Si that has 46k miles (twice what the subaru had on it)on it and has had no mechnical problems, not to mention only requires 1/3 of the maintenance. It still drives like new, its surprisingly not much slower, gets over 50% better gas mileage, and is still rattle free. I'm sure the '12 sti is better than my '08 was. It had better be a lot better. No wonder I got it at such a discount when it was new.
I also drive a turbo mustang that hasn't broken any ringlands that wasn't even designed for boost.
Please explain to me why ALL of page one google hits for "ringland failure" were on Subaru engines when these components aren't unique to Subaru engines. It's pretty obvious that I am far from the only other person who has experienced this problem.

No innovation or passion at Subaru? I hate to tell you this, but you're outright wrong on that front. Subaru continues to do what they've always done and make a better car this year than they did last year. Mind you, "better" doesn't always mean "prettier" or "sportier" but generally speaking, the new models do at least as much as the old model did, but with even better stuff added on. Compare that to Toyota or Honda who have made recent and serious missteps with their golden geese (the Corolla and Civic respectively). Now, I'm not saying I'm going to go out there and buy a new Impreza and love it over my old 2.5RS Bug-Eye (I still cry over the fact that I sold it many years ago) But the new Impreza is lightyears beyond the 2.0 Impreza of the same model year as my 2.5 in power, handling, acceleration, fuel economy, cargo space, leg room, interior comfort, etc. etc. etc. You have to remember that Subaru's main focus this past decade has been on two things.

1) Squeezing better fuel economy out of the boxer platform (a tough job BTW)

2) Proving to be a more ecologically responsible company than any other out there by going zero-landfill etc. instead of just throwing a battery in the back of the car and saying "look ma! I'm a hybrid!"

New Subies are better in so many ways, and much more innovative in so many ways, than old Subies (with a few nostalgic exceptions) and what's more, they know their market. Is a small portion made up of sporty enthusiasts? Yes. And so you got the F-XT, the WRX, and the BRZ. Is the larger portion looking for the best all-around vehicle with safety, stability, room for gear, and comfort? Yep. And so you get that in the rest of their line.

Just because they haven't done anything like the 22B or Bug-Eye in 10 years (although the BRZ really comes close if you ask me) doesn't mean they aren't evolving, innovating, and making the best decisions they can.

Also, remember this, their innovative autos were always albatrosses around their necks in the past. See many SVX/XT6/Original 2.5RS's around these days? No? Yeah, it's because they sold like crap. In hindsight are they great innovative car designs that deserved longer lives? Yep! Does that help them pay the bills as a company? Nope.

Seattle/Olympia area, the Subaru is considered a lifeystyle car. Don't ask me, I don't get it either. I want one now!

We are in the Pacific Northwest. Pretty sure the Subaru's here come standard with a COEXIST bumper sticker. I tell her all the time she's wrong; doesn't matter. Maybe she's making up for her femininity, since she was a college basketball player and 6 feet tall? Haha.

Not make fun of me, make fun of her. Subaru's in Washington State are a status car, fully equipped with the COEXIST bumper sticker.

Definitely. Lost a lot of potential buyers and more importantly repeat-buyers, like Nell up there. Hopefully they don't fuck up 2015's WRX/STi doin the same shenanigans. And if you see a 2013 WRX giving you a thumbs up, its probably me since I'm the only Subaru owner I know that does that to the MS3's :P

I would like to add 2 things - I picked up a limited this week on the spot. I could not wait 2-3 months + for the factory to send what I really wanted - a touring model without eyesight. It rides really nice although my dash board seems to be somehow slightly faded and oddly my navigation computer says it has 250 miles on it although my odometer says I only have about 100 miles. I asked a guy at the dealership but he did not know & the one tech. he asked did not know about this nor the fact that the dealer has to activate the shock sensors, which has me thinking maybe I should find another dealer who knows what they are doing.

I am not sure now if the 2-3 months plus they told me was truthful because after I bought the car I was told I could get some parts at the dealers cost, however when i went into do so they tried to hose me. Luckily I checked and another dealer had listed prices online cheaper than what they were trying to tell me was their price. Should I be mad? I have 2 years maintenance, but that does not mean I need to take it to the same dealership for 2 years, especially if they are lying to me left and right. They told me this car just came in but the fact that the dash seems faded and the navigation has an extra 250 miles has me wondering also the multi function control is lacking the feature to turn the audible off when you open/close or lock the doors, although it looks really sharp and drives well I love it for the most part. I wish the dealer would be able to sell and install turn mirrors with lights on them like the touring models get.

I 2nd that Forester Limited w. NaV. Some people complain about the NAV but it reminds me of the ones on the systems when i rented a car overseas, so i am cool with that.
