I actually really like this car, even though it needs moar power. Used to drive one that was a company car, in that color.

Not much of a problem here

I kinda really want one of these now. Are they as bad on rust as the first generation 6? Those were horrible.

I feel dumb for having to ask, but is that a Protege wagon?

I once went to a Mazda meet with a friend of mine and we went on some fun twisty back roads in Lynchburg, VA. The guy leading was in a really nice RX8, and the automatic stock Protege5 behind him could hang with him in the corners. Brilliant, if underpowered, cars.

Protege5. Some argue that it's a wagon (Like me), some argue that it's a 5 door hatch.
Either way, yes, it's a Protege.

I don't really agree... It's missing one key thing: RWD.
I honestly think my P5 could be my ideal car if it was RWD with around 200hp.

I really wanted to buy a Protege5 before I ended up buying my Subaru Legacy, but around here Protege5s have held their value really well. There weren't any stick-shift models that didn't have a salvage title in my price range.

I completely understand. The one I have has some ricer modifications when I bought it (clear taillights, buzzing exhaust, lowering springs, 18in rims), and they only really made it worse. Plus I probably overpaid for it.
Oh well, it's a fun and economical vehicle, even if it is too bouncy and rough and looks like it's owned by a highschooler.

Oh yeah. Worse, on some.

I own a Protege5 with all of the Mazdaspeed Protege suspension goodies. They really are excellent cars to drive. I friend of mine has a NA miata, and I have driven them back to back. The Protege5 can keep up no problem, but the Miata still feels more connected to the road. Plus RWD is a huge bonus with the Miata.
Car and Driver gave the car high praise for it's handling capabilities. Here is a link to that.
And here is a picture of said cars during a road trip through the mountains.

They're kinda fun, but wwd and have rust problems.

I know about the 1st gen 6 rust problems all too well. I got rid of my '06 MS6 because it had rust in both rear wheel wells, the passenger side back door, on the windshield frame, on the front strut towers, the front passenger wheel hub, and probably some other places. Fun car but just couldn't bring myself to spend the money to fix all that cancer.

Yeah, I worked on them for a few months. The rocker panel would basically turn into rust. Not from chipped paint or accumulated moisture. The whole thing at once. on both sides. The paint just didn't do anything.

Not much rust to worry about here in TN

With how prematurely my MS6 developed rust problems (granted, I live in Wisconsin) I wouldn't be surprised at all if a P5 developed rust in places not generally known for rusty cars.

I just checked one out today with my friend, and it had literally no rust on the underside or anywhere. I was surprised
