James Burke takes a very long time to explain automobile technology and the connection to Mercedes' perfume. Counts as class credit.

1993 Connections series with James Burke will take 45 minutes of informative dialogue, explaining everything from lightning storms to the M in Mercedes-Benz.

Along the way, you will learn something or you know too much already.

Or you've already watched these. Either way.

I recommend the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I loved those shows. Saw every one of the original series (in rerun). The original run of the show was in 1978, which explains that awesome leisure suit. I watched Connections2 and 3, but they weren't nearly as good as the original series. I particularly like the episode about how the plow transformed human civilization.

BTW, the music at the very beginning of this episode is by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's from his 7th symphony, "Symphonia Antarctica." He used materials from his soundtrack to the film Scott of the Antarctic . Great piece.

As an American, I put the blame for my fascination with history and science squarely on the BBC.
