Somebody explain this. Engine wouldn't fit?
In related news, I think I have found my custom truck topper design.

Lotus was trying to make an El Camino but all they had was a side picture, but the engineers were drunk and accidentally drew the body facing the wrong direction on the chassis.

The fibreglass tray is your boot/trunk, and is removable for servicing.
also here's another Europa, because pew pew snorkels.

I think it was Lotus's first Mid engine car.. and they cobbled together some renault parts to make it work. Add a dose of the seventies and you get this weird thing!!

Two main factors, I think. It was a very aerodynamic design, and it was made of fibreglass. Also, it's a very low car, so the rear deck is only about bonnet height on most cars; they couldn't have dropped it any lower. The compromises were acceptable because the Europa was basically intended to be a club racer - something of a Seven replacement.

Thanks. I guess it was an early stage leading to those big tail things we see today. I was hoping the styling and engineering department hadn't taken consecutive vacations.

I'm not sure the styling department weren't on holiday. The engineers were all slaving away, though. Essentially it's much the same idea as the Ford GT40.
They're styled very differently, but the basic shape is remarkably similar.
Maybe it's easiest to see what I'm talking about with the bonnet and wings - they share a similar profile from front-on, and that continues the whole way through the car. Obviously you have to make allowances for the different sized wheels, and the fact that unlike the guys at Lotus, the Ford designers weren't working by candlelight. If you can imagine the Lotus with huge flared wheelarches like the GT40, though, you'll get the right idea.

Thanks, I've learned a lot from discussing a toy. The matchbox model as well.

For some reason I haven't seen any new Matchbox at all in Toys R Us, Walmart, etc. for the past few months in Canada.
