If GM halved the LT1 and made a 3.1L I-4 with 230HP.

Would be a good motor for a small truck

Or a lightweight RWD coupe. The 240sx used the nissan truck motor. Why not. Especially if you are staying N/A. The displacement would help. Of course this is not the direct things are going these days. Booooooooooooo.

They chopped it a bit to make the 4.3 so why not?

Then you'd have a fairly agricultural I4 with class-following power and torque figures.

Just for the sake of argument, the 3.0 diesel V6 in it's Citroen Hdi guise makes as much power and over a hundred more torques, and in top tune Jag/Range Rover spec it makes 270bhp and 440 lbs/ft - that's only twenty fewer torques than an entire LT1.

Now I come to think of it, what has GM done to the LT1 to get so little power and so little torque out of so much capacity?

Hello, my name is Bob and I am a 3.0 liter i-4 who makes 236 horsepower. You can find me inside the engine bay of the nearest Porsche 968 built between 1992 and 1995.

Mitsu Starion rocked the 2.6 I4 from the D500(?) and also found in forklifts.

They built it to last and be serviced easily.

Yeaaaaaa. Ford Lima 2.3 came from pintos used in forklifts as well. It is a iron slug. I should know I owned one.

Pushrods my friend. Makes it much more lighter and more compact (Car and Driver said the C7 had the lowest CoG of any car they tested) then the displacement suggests, and you don't have to rev it that high to make power. Can also be fixed with pretty much anything and will run until then end of time.

Thinking about it, it's a fairly cheap engine for the power output as well, isn't it?

Very much so. There's a reason you see a lot more LS engines used in swaps rather then something like a Ford Modular.
