I want this as reference for what NOT to do to, ever.
I plan on getting a Miata soon and I have some ideas for it cosmetically and ergonomically but I fear that they will be deemed ricer and that is certainly not the look I want to go for. I want to keep it classy and simple but just add a little bit of my own touch. So think of this as a ricer encyclopedia. I'll start off with some obvious ones.
Big chrome rims
Huge useless wing
Aftermarket Euro lights
Non-OEM ambient LED interior lights UNLESS it's pulled off correctly (I will admit this is what I wanted to do to my future Miata but thought otherwise)
Obnoxious paint colors
An entire car covered in Plasti-Dip (maybe that's just me though I do like Plasti-Dip in the right places)
Non-relevant emblems like "turbo"
Add more please!

Unpainted body panels.

Useless air vents! Such as hood scoops and those absolutely horrible fake side vents!

That car in your pic? It's not my cup of tea, but I actually like it because it looks well done. Riced out cars look hacked together at best.

crooked license plate.
I have to say this car acutally looks like the people knew what they were doing or they just know how to use lots of bondo. Still it is apocalyptically ugly.

As a general rule, I'd say anything which has no effect (or a negative effect) on performance. So stuff like giant wings on FWD cars, ugly cheap wheels, fake vents, too much camber, etc...

This is the new era of ricer, hellaflush

When any sort of shape, or size is exaggerated.
In general you need a bigger car to pull of 20+ inch wheels.
You need a supercar to get away with a big wing, or a Daytona.

Painted calipers/drums in loud colors on cars that clearly don't have/need upgraded brakes. I painted the brakes on my Civic LX black because I switched the steelies to alloy wheels and they became more visible. A family member asked why I didn't paint them red. I feel like that's ricey. Especially painted drums.

The simplest answer is to not stick to a theme and then overdoing it makes you a ricer. If you want a "race" car, then don't put on a ridiculous front bumper with 3 fog light cutouts and a 5 inch long front "lip" that we all know does nothing. Use a purposeful front bumper with a lip since all track racers know it's gonna get scraped up so stick with the simple stock one. If you want a show car, think a bit further in time than "the next show". What looks good today might not look good tomorrow. Remember when "tear" and "tribal" vinyls were a thing?
At least, that's how I define it. A slightly lowered civic with a modest suite of upgrades and maybe a thin rear spoiler and front lip with nice 17" wheels? Not a bad ride. 22" chrome with triple fart cans and 20,000W of subs bought at sams club? Even if it is "fast" or a "show" car, you're overdoing it. No one cares at that point. I can't respect it because you didn't know what you were doing.

To me it's anything that's supposed to be a performance upgrade that just isn't. For instance cheesy spoilers, drum brakes painted red, fart can mufflers, awful body kits that don't actually have a purpose and most importantly a lack of taste.

Burn me at the stake if you will (My ginger-kind has been through that before) but I gotta be honest, I like the design work put into the body kit in that top image. It's ultra-futuristic in a 1950's sort of way. Remove the tires and you've got yourself a perfect hover-car/jetson's style sky car, this screams awesome concept art.

Anything that changes the way your car looks or sounds, without making it faster, is rice in my opinion. Anything loud and attention grabbing on a car is rice, especially if its a slow car. Any FWD economy car with a wing is rice. Stickers are rice, unless they are actual sponsors paying you and/or giving you free parts. Stretched tires are rice.
Calling your wheels rims is wrong, also. They are wheels.

I respect that

Whole point is, the Daytona/Superbird doesn't really need a big wing anymore.

As I checked your post a crz with flames and double spoiler parked a couple spots down.. Figured it fit the rice criteria

.THESE.

There are two main trains of thought behind rice.
Making your not-at-all fast car look faster than it is.
Bolting accessories to your car that do nothing because of how slow/not powerful your car is.
The picture is already a powerful (but extreme and not really typical) example of these thought patterns. A 4 cylinder engine with maybe 80 whp does not need giant dual exhaust outlets. This car will never travel fast enough to make use of a spoiler on it, ever. Yet it has two.
Let us not devolve into simple stereotype bashing though, because your car doesn't need to have to come from japan to be a prime candidate for ricing. It doesn't even have to be slow and under powered to be riced out. Brace your eyes:

Here's a couple for you:
First this sticker:
Second, annoys the crap out of me everytime i see it. Specialty bumper with 2 exhaust cut outs but only one exhaust pipe (this was shockingly hard to find a picture of, but there's an EVO in my work parking lot every day that has a custom bumper and single exhaust. It has 2 exit cutouts, drives me insane:
Lambo doors, because we know this eagle talon is not a lambo, nor did have these stock:
![]() 10/14/2013 at 15:49 |

Wow what a shame, it actually looks pretty damn good until you see the hideous creation the back has become.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 16:22 |
|
I think the only logical reason for having Lambo doors on a car, is based on where you park and how the rest of the car is not modded to suit, such as that Eagle. If you have a one car garage, and it's one of those really tiny ones that barely even fit your car and you want a Z06 Corvette, it might make some sense to have them just to be able to get in and out of the car. Same goes for putting it in a storage shed off site, like what I would do if I lived in the city.
This, however, is still a pretty terrible reason to consider putting them on your car.

putting an exhaust =/= rice, then?
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:10 |
|
lol. Yeah 2 exhaust cutouts drives me crazy.
The worst part is that having 2 exhaust pipes on a car with an I-4 is stupid in the first place. Damned if you do, damned if you dont.
Side note: My V6 car has 2 exhaust pipes with cutouts. The exhaust flows separately from the headers, meets up and then re-separates into 2 pipes. Facepalm.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:12 |

Oh come on. Putting a cam on your LS3 doesn't count as ricing out a car.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:14 |

My friend spent a couple of grand on this front end, but I can't really call him a ricer, despite the fact that there are no performance gains whatsoever.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:16 |
|
Riciness isn't about modifications, its about modifications masquerading as performance enhancers.
Its any sort of false representation.
That's why a new camshaft isn't a ricey mod, but a useless rear wing is.
![]() 10/14/2013 at 17:22 |
|
Well, I may have slightly overstated the case there :)
The way I understand 'ricer', though, it may originally have referred to Japanese cars, but these days someone could rice a Corvette or Mustang or something else typically Mmmerican.
Of course if you ask an Australian, this is a rice-car (mite):

There are obviously a few exceptions, I'd probably do the same if I had a GTO!

Not by default on all cars. Big coffee can mufflers are rice.

There's no way to describe it. But I know it when I see it.

Oh does it have an X pipe? It's very common for dual exhausts to have an X pipe. People love them, despite even companies like Flowmaster saying they don't really gain anything from it.
My V8 in my Montego goes straight back on both sides with out touching in the most true dual exhaust you can possible have lol.
You're right though 2 exhausts on a 4 is silly.
One time at the Detroit AutoShow I thought I'd have some fun with one of the car models (I'm sorry I mean "spokespeople"...sure). It was the reveal of the LFA and it had those tri-exhaust pipes. So I asked her if it was Triple Exhaust. She said of course it has 3 exhaust pipes. So I asked what engine it was going to have? It has a V8 (which at the time was the expectation). So I said is it TRUE triple exhaust?? So 3 mufflers and 3 catalytic converters and 3 exits? Her reply- Of course! So how would that work?Do they have one whole side of the motor through one pipe, then 2 cylinders through each of the other 2? That seems silly. Her only reply was "Well, all I know is that it's definitely a triple exhaust and it looks really cool!"
Hahahaha
![]() 10/15/2013 at 13:33 |

True dual is sweeet. Especially on a V8, which we all know are the coolest sounding engines.
It's funny, every time i'm with my buddy and we see a 458 he comments about the dumb triple exhaust. I dont know when that started being a "thing" but 3 pipes makes no sense in 99 percent of situations (side note, kind of want to see a 3-cyl car go one pipe per cylinder into a triple exhaust.)
As for my car, it is not an X-pipe. its straight up factory rice fake dual.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 14:36 |

ooo noooooo. lol
and damn you. now I want to see a 3 cylinder tri-exhaust!

Tinted tails and emblems. I have never seen this look good on a car.
