Was a few cars behind an Audi A8L (a D2, not a new one) on the highway this morning, and the guy had an interesting habit: he'd never turn his turn signal off. He would switch between left and right as he maneuvered around slower traffic, but he would always leave it on, forever.

I've never seen anything quite like it, as usually people who leave their blinkers on simply forgot to turn it off. I remember if you left your signal on for over a quarter mile in my family's Caprice wagon, a chime would start, as if to say "Hey, wake up stupid, your signal's still on!"

This guy either seemed to be continuously keeping his options open...or was an idiot.

Maybe he was doing the Autobahn thing of leaving it on to make slower cars get out of the way? In germany I literally saw a cop with sirens and lights on move out of the left lane as a Ferrari with left turn signal blinking came up behind him.

It's also a very French thing. But the French tend towards the aggressive behind the wheel of a diesel 1.5L Citroen.

It's the weird euro-style signal stalks; they don't 'click' into place like a normal turn signal, they just bounce back up to center and stay on until you turn the wheel enough to reset them or cancel them by bumping it back the way you hit it. Combine it with the signal beacon being very quiet as opposed to something older/less refined, and I think it'd be pretty easy to do. I have to be pretty deliberate about manually cancelling turn signals in my 135 for the same reason.
