Microsoft is now offering a workaround to get your updates. No more waiting for carriers to get off their lazy asses and approve! (Warning. This may invalidate your manufacturer warranty. Microsoft has all kinds of disclaimers around this one)

They're offering a "developer preview" for GDR3. This isn't as much of a preview as it is a "fuck you" to carriers (read: AT&T), allowing people to do their own damn updating. You don't even have to pay for a developer account.

Go !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and log in with the Microsoft account tied to your phone. They'll send you an email with a certificate to install. It acts like nothing happens when you install the certificate. That means its working.

Once the cert is installed, go !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (or scan the QR below)to install the Preview for Developers app. Once the app is installed, run it from your phone. Follow the prompts and log in with the same account you used in step 1.

Once done, go to Settings -> phone update and check for updates. Install, business as usual. You're now running GDR3! Enjoy things like screen rotation lock, custom notification sounds for emails/texts/etc, Driving Mode, and better application and storage management!

I am posting this here because I know a lot of Opponauts would be interested in this information, and I also don't have authorship on the other sub-sites like Observation Deck and whatnot. Feel free to share this post anywhere and everywhere you feel fit, homps.

I'm not sure if this applies, but I read this article today and it kinda left me a little unsure about the updates:

Well Driving Mode is a part of GDR3. And it does allow you to block things. Why would this make you unsure?

Nice. I had to use a 3rd party program to update my WP7 to 7.8 because Sprint decided that they didn't care about my phone anymore.

I did the same thing to get my phone to GDR2/Amber because AT&T is glacial about approving updates.

Two weeks after I got pissed and ROMhacked my phone, they finally approved it. F 'em.

Whoops. At first I thought it would block incoming calls and texts, but not the outgoing. After rereading it, it looks like it will just silence incoming calls and texts. I read it too quickly the first time.

Ah, got ya. It actually has multiple settings, and you can set it to block all calls/texts and automatically respond with a "Hey I'm driving, you butt" text if you want it to.

Thanks handler of Roger! I had the first part done first to tinker with the web-based app development tool. But the second was good for me to get GDR3 for Verizon on my Lumia 822.
