But nothing sounds better at idle than a cammed V8. NOTHING!

They're a bitch to drive on the street though if my dad's experience with a highly tuned Mustang he built with a friend back in the 70s (which is why he cringes whenever I start talking about aggressive cams).

But think about the performance gains!!! Not to mention the sounds! I have heard you tend to lose a bit of power on the low end and make it up top instead. Great for racecars and stuff, not so much for a road car.

Given the bulkiness of most American muscle cars, that low-end torque is actually very desirable you know. A high-revving V8 does a lot more good in a lighter car, although of course you can get used to it in a 3750-ish lbs car as well.
People who just throw a big cam in an engine and call it a day annoy me. There so much more you can do to an engine if you want performance!

Yeah, large cams are one of the few reasons for having an auto in a ride. Torque converters really help drivability of a loping V8

Not generally a fan. Just makes me think "Redneck truck that needs a tune-up"

I dunno. For pure unadulterated sound I just swoon over a straight six...

I would never own an automatic so that kills it for me. I believe the Mustang my dad tuned was a stick-shift ('64 or '65 notchback I believe, I'll have to ask him) so it was pretty tricky to drive.

As someone who sorta DD a car with quite an aggressive cam, I can tell you that it really ain't too bad (at least not with an auto). You just gotta be prepared to "catch" it if you let the RPM's drop too low. Other than that, it's pretty much standard fare.
Swapping in an aggressive cam is probably the best thing you can do if you want a lot of hp on a budget. How can you be annoyed with cheap hp?!

Like Alex-Ripper said an auto makes it a lot easier to drive, especially with a torque converter with the right stall speed (I believe it has to be pretty high but I might be wrong). I dislike autos so to me that's pretty irrelevant.

I'm no expert on this sorta stuff either but I can tell you that I still run with my original torque converter, which has a very low stall speed (probably around 1500-2000 RPM, judging from the engine sound) but it works just fine. Unfortunately, that in combination with the very high gearing on my rear axle, means that it takes ages getting from 0-60 :(

The person who designed that gauge cluster needs to be put to death.

I challenge that assumption. I like cammed v8s but I also really like aggressively ported rotaries...

The worst are people who toss cams into turbo cars just because they see NA people do it. There is a lot to consider when doing cams NA... even more when you are now not only matching to engine and rpm, but also turbo size and curve. Most people ruin their cars because they just buy off the shelf parts that don't match up and assume they would be an upgrade.
Also, I completely agree about aggressive cams sucking on old carbureted muscle cars. We had a hot Cuda that would barely idle even with you messaging the gas, and was always loading up if you tried to maintain a speed. It was specifically tuned for drag runs.

Actually, Offy does everything better, it's the Miata of engines
It's hard to find one idling cause they beg to be revved
