You finally see a car you haven't seen all game (at about 50% now), and now that you appropriate it, you see them all the time.

There's some damn voodoo in the car spawning algorithms. On my first playthrough, the place was lousy with Infernuses. On my second, though, there are none. Haven't seen one. I have, however, seen countless Sabre Turbos, which are ungodly rare most of the time.

I haven't played V yet, but IV was like this. It would generate cars in batches, so when you rolled up into a neighbourhood and spotted the Corvette (edit: it was called the Coquette ) you knew you were in for some fun times 'cause EVERYBODY would be driving them.

It could also be a bit of "awareness bias" - that's a psych term I just invented that means you're more likely to see something that you've recently become aware of because your brain gives priority to processing information about that object.

For example, I can confirm scientifically* that I have never seen a Discovery II or LR3 in Montréal until I recently got sick with got Disco Fever. Now I see them, and LR4s, too, quite often. My awareness bias has made me more aware of them, 'cause it's not like they've been cranking out new Disco IIs in the past few years...

* No evidence is available to confirm my claims. I just like making stuff up.

I frequently notice this as well. A word or an idea will pop up for the first time in my life, and then I'll hear it EVERYWHERE.

And I don't mean words that come into and out of fashion. These are words that the people involve claim they've been using for years.

It's done to make the game easier to render. However, it's fun to see it as the game messing with you.

I'm at 90% and there are some cars I still haven't seen.

Yeah there's been some discussion on the forums, apparently there's an issue with memory usage and car spawning. I stole a semi with cars on a transport trailer attached, and once I started driving it, 90% of the traffic was semis with different cabs, hauling identical (but car-less) trailers.

Some odd bugs in this game.

Sounds a bit excessive, but I'm pretty sure the way it worked was intentional in GTA IV. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Rockstar's idea of a bad joke:

Oh, you've been searching for hours and hours for that special sports car? Congratulations, now everyone has it! You're not special anymore! HA HA HA!

I can see the memory usage explanation: The game can only load so many assets at once, so it tries to repeat them where possible.

The other part is just a holdover from the other games. Even as far back as 3, the cars that spawned were largely determined by the car you were driving. Since IV had so few "exotic" cars, and each sort of had its own grouping, you saw a lot of repeats.

Is this your first GTA? You don't know the infamous "GTA Effect"? You want a car but can never find it, then after you FINALLY find it, parked in some obscure ass back alley, or on some small road, or in a parking lot way out in the middle of no where, you get the car and every other car you pass is the one you are driving.

Awareness bias does seem to be a real thing (I never noticed the abundance of Volvos or Minis until my family owned one of each), but in the game, it's almost like a glitch. It's a lot more subtle in V, but in IV, whatever car you were driving would litter the roads and all the parking spots. It's especially noticeable if you're driving a supercar through neighborhoods like Bohan.

I stole a Jeep and now they spawn EVERYwhere. Blaine County. Down by the docks. In the 'hood. Even in Vinewood. WTF??

Oh no, I know it's a GTA thing. Been playing since SA.

One funny thing is, a guy at work bought the official guide, and ever since the online update, I've been seeing cars that aren't in it, and I've never seen before. Not complaining, because it's the Vapid sedan from IV that was always a taxi and police car. Now it's in V as a civilian car, and a unmarked cop car with a push bumper. Nice.

Thats interesting. I noticed last night there were a bunch of porsche cars around. I stole a black one and cruised north.

It took me ages to find a Futo, but now I see them all the time. That doesn't stop me from wanting to steal every one I see though...

I don't have GTA V yet, but I'd assumed that the cookie-cutter effect was toned down since GTA IV with the sheer variety of cars that seem to be in the game. The Coquette seems like it's readily available from the start, based off of the videos I've seen.

I only just noticed this, but I think the door handles and rear quarter windows are cues from the GT-R. I'd assumed the whole thing was only inspired by the C7.

Could just be me, but I hadn't seen one until last night.

Not that I've gone LOOKING for cars, per se. I just happened to be at a mission point and there was one in the parking lot.

I'm just saying that, given how Franklin and Michael seem to spend their time in some pretty nice cars and affluent areas right off the bat, there should be Coquettes driving around that can be stolen. I don't blame you for not noticing them, though.

At least you have a copy of GTA V , unlike me.

thats weird as hell

I remember when they released the expansions for GTA IV and I saw new cars running around, I was like "where the fuck have those been?"
