This is the basic concept behind all motors and generators(more so a generator in this case). The motion of the magnetic field past the metal creates eddy currents, and resists motion etc etc....

I assume that this is happening because a changing magnetic field induces a current, but there doesn't appear to be a circuit for the current to pass through. What's going on here?

Large neodymium magnets scare me. Not because they are almost magical, but mainly because they will crush your fingers if you're not paying enough attention. And even if you're paying attention, you'll probably end up with crushed fingers.

This is the basic concept behind all motors and generators. Magnet moves by conductor, and induces current flow. This in turn creates resistance to movement of the magnet (conservation of energy and all that jazz). Its just in a different less useful form here. (I tried posting this a minute ago, that post didn't seem to take, but if it does sorry for multiple posts)

I've always wondered if electromagnets could be used to control the valve train in a motor. Think about it.... no need for a cam which means fewer moving parts, less resistance and less heat. Not to mention infinitely variable valve lift and duration. It could be like vtec or vvti on steroids.
