I knew the fuel filler neck leaked, so I stopped filling it up all the way. I had the tubes but couldn't get a tool in to release the clamps. So a couple days ago it was down to 3/8th of a tank, I put 5 gallons in. It spent most of the day yesterday letting out those 5 new gallons onto the driveway from the left front.
I had just rebuilt the carbs, replaced two of the hard lines in the engine bay, replaced the fuel pump, got the linkages for the chokes corrected, sorted out the vacuum lines. Sure, it wasn't ready for wet-weather duty due to seals and places where rust needs to be stopped. But I wanted to keep driving it while the weather allowed.
Just have too much funds going out to be able to drop money into a new tank and the parts that go with it for a few months. Hopefully I'll be able to spend the time sanding down the spots where the paint's been chipped and putting a little paint to protect the metal go over the underbody with something (haven't decided yet, either POR15 or 3M underbody spray). I'm not done with the project, but wish the "quest for long term roadiness" didn't take such a sharp detour after it was improving so much.
Unlike the prior owner, it's going to be much less than 3 years before it hits the road again.

I've always had a soft spot for corvairs, felt they got a bad rap.
Cool little cars.

They really did. But it was the Mustang that killed them. Not Nader. They really do handle quite brilliantly.
