Snapped these while I was heading in to the Lincoln Tunnel so I didn't get a chance to chat with them. Anyone know what VW that is and where they might be heading?

Both Beetle derivatives. One is a Karmann Ghia, the other, well, you know what that is.

As others have said, an absolutely gorgeous Karmann Ghia. My dad had a '72 Ghia, but I was never old enough to drive it. I sure rode in it a lot, though. And my brother got every ounce of whatever little bit of oomph it had, which was not much at all. Fun little car, though.

It's 1971 or newer, so not too much of a 'classic'. The federal big signal lights give it away. The earlier 60s models have bullet signals, and the classic lowlights are 1959 and earlier.
Interesting fender flags..

Looks like you hit upon the Tour Americal road rally. Near as I can tell from their website (which is almost entirely in Dutch, there's a link to an English version but it won't load for me) they're mostly from Belgium/Netherlands. They're doing an eight day tour of the eastern U.S, ultimately ending in Miami.
Day 1: New York to WashingtonDay 2: Washington to Charlottesville
Day 3: Charlottesville to Mount Airy
Day 4: Mout Airy to Aiken
Day 5: Aiken to Savannah
Day 6: Savannah to Daytona
Day 7: Daytona to Stuart
Day 8: Stuart to Miami
It looks like a fun event. They're taking all the good roads (like the Blue Ridge Parkway) instead of the interstate, and stopping at museums, speedways (like Sebring) and car shows along the way.
What's really interesting though, is it looks like there's two groups in the rally. There's a tracking map on the website which shows front runners down in Virginia approaching North Carolina (which suggests they're on day 2, headed to Charlottesville), and a large second pack stretching from New York to just south of Philadelphia (day 1). The official dates for the rally on the website are the 7-17, so there could indeed be two groups.

Got the English version of the front page to load:
Dear Classic Car Enthusiast,
For 10 years now we have been organizing rallies for “men only” within Europe. We believe this anniversary to be the perfect occasion to plan a varied trip in 2013 through the eastern states of the United States.
And at this occasion the ladies are more than welcome!
We aim at giving you the opportunity to discover on your own rhythm a colorful and diversified part of the New World with the help of a roadbook and this in your own classic car! For clearness’ sake: we do not intend to propose elaborate visits but we offer you an extensive choice of impressions of this side of the United States.
What is on the menu: metropolises as The Big Apple and Washington , the amazing Blue Ridge Mountains, the colonial Old South , nostalgic Savannah , the east coast of magic Florida through speedy Daytona down to fancy Palm Beach and trendy Miami . Enwrapped in the striking beauty of the Indian Summer we will be crossing no less than 9 States! We will be covering 2400 kilometers within 8 travel days which means an average of 300 kilometers per day, mostly on quiet picturesque byways.
Our basic package for this 10-day trip includes your round trip flights, the round trip transfer of your own classic car, 9 typical American hotels/motels (3* and 4*) breakfast included, assistance, luggage van, a unique roadbook, ...
If you feel inclined to extend your stay and arrive earlier in New York or remain a few days longer in Miami, we will gladly assist you. In order to limit the groups we propose 3 days of departure with a maximum of 60 cars a day.
Our website www.touramerical.com will be regularly updated and you will find links to places of interest on your route to enable you to plan your day at your leisure.
