it went well. apparently if you can get good at oxy fuel, tig is quite a bit easier

I quite like oxy-acetylene welding. From what I understand, the principles are the same with TIG, but the way you manage your heat is with your foot.

Oxy is controlled at the torch, iirc.

Yup. Tig is the foot pedal. The different tips on the oxy torch determine the size of the flame and the amount of heat available to put in the metal.

the instructor told us that. he said some of the motor skills are the same with the dabbing of the filler metal and managing the puddle.

i don't know if it's because we learned stick first or what, but i definitely found that horizontal and vertical up welding were a LOT easier w/ O-A than with stick

He may be right. He's an instructor. I found Tig welding very intimidating. I found OA welding quite easy.
