I said that I am somewhat alright with Porsche putting the PDK as the only transmission for the new 991 GT3? We all know it's justified on paper, but we also know that shifting yourself is about 99.99999% better than flipping a paddle in terms of driver involvement/pleasure.

Kinja'd!!!

So, it's my first day posting on Oppo after being a longtime reader/commenter so I guess I should throw my credibility out the window from day one, right? Am I right to put my trust in Porsche's hands as to whether they will make the right engineering choices?

Nothing wrong with saying that. The GT3 is for track use, because racecar. Therefore, PDK = good.

As a fellow porschephile, I am okay with this. My logic is the same as everyone else's - it isn't an automatic, it is a computer aided manual. Yes you don't get to "throw" the gears anymore but in a car like this, removing a hand from the steering wheel could prove deadly. At the end of the day it is a brutally fast car that will be the basis of many more victories for Porsche. If they think using only the PDK is the right move.....well I can't argue with their results so far.

"Paddle shifters? Paddle shifters are for F1 drivers." is what I said years ago when they first started appearing in production cars.

Now they're everywhere. I drove a 2013 Camry with paddle shifters the other day. Yes, you did read that correctly, do not check your picture.

So they're popular, but so are sticks, so really, Porsche should have continued to offer both.

Is how I feel about a camry with paddles. I wish Porsche would offer both, but the statement their putting out with only offering PDK is basically forcing the rest of their competition to follow suit. Maybe the Gallardo replacement with have a special edition with RWD and a manual gated shifted. Wet dreams.

This is a subject for another day, but I've recently come to feel that sticks are going the way of the dodo. There will always be some form of manual control over the transmission and engine, but, in future, it may not come with a stick and a clutch. Our grandchildren may be as unfamiliar with it as we are with the engine Choke button/lever.

As much as we put them up on a pedestal, Porsche is a business, just like any other car manufacturer. As much as I want them to always offer the option of a true manual, they're only to do so if the demand is there. It will be interesting to see if the demand from past Porsche owners is high enough to warrant them offering a manual in the new GT3 after all.

I just hope that Porsche, BMW, Mazda and others still offer true manual transmissions many more years into the future.

I will not lie, if I could afford this machine, it would be high on my test drive list. PDK and all.

At least we have the M3/M4 confirmed to have manuals. We can rest for another model generation.

Without a doubt they will go the way of the dodo in at the most 15 years I reckon. That's why I'm trying to scramble and find something cool w/ a stick that I could keep until I end up farting dust and can't drive anymore. So continues the search for 911 3.2 Targas...

I honestly think I would knock a 458 or Mp4 off my list with this in contention. Money no object, of course.

You'd get castrated on here if you complained about a dual-clutch tranny, oddly enough.

Honestly, putting a PDK in their flagship car doesn't bother me. One would think that if someone is 'well-heeled' enough to buy a brand new 991, there's a greater than zero chance they own a 996 (for example) with a true manual so they can get their jollies.

However, a former VP (and unapologetic Italian) of the company I work for, bought a brand new 991 and he told me the PDK is "un-fucking-believable".

That's enough of an endorsement for me.

As long as I can own a 996 GT3 sometime in the future.

Kinja'd!!!

Because 997s are too expensive. And I like the looks of the 996 GT3 *gasp*

My kid is 6. Will there be any new cars available with a manual transmission in a decade (beside small, boutique makers)? (not that I'd consider buying my 16 year-old a new car...)

If anything, it'll be a Alfa Guilletta with the 1.6 liter MultiJet Diesel motor. And it will only be available in Europe. And it will be completely useless.

On another note-Every 16 year old should drive a station wagon. My first car was a 2004 E500 4Matic Wagon and it was the best/worst thing on earth (I'm 20 now). Even if the kid doesn't like cars, station wagons give someone some sort of motivation to not drive their parents wagon when their out of college. Unless they group to be a jalop-then they'll gladly do a LS7 swap into the 04 MB wagon.

Gasp is right. At least you're man enough to admit it. I think the 997.2 GT3 in a navy blue is probably the most beautiful car modern car made.

I don't know, there's something about the 997 GT3 that just doesn't look quite right. I think it's the front lower air dam. It's to small and looks like a five year old sucking on a straw. Other than that, it's spot on. I am a fan of the 997.2 4.0 RS.

As far as most beautiful modern car, I have to go with either the fax machine or the wind God.

The 4.0 RS will undoubtedly be one of the most sought after Porsche's ever made come 20 years from now when Porsche is forced to make base 911's with turbocharged flat 4's and 10 speed PDK's. And you won't be able to drive it, just ride around while Google controls the rest of your life.
