Rush - is pretty awesome. I have found my movie of the year earlier this week - being a regular of Io9 and ObservationDeck, Gravity remains undefeated. (And if you care for Space as much as you care for cars, I guess I still recommend Gravity slightly more..)
I must say though, turning the rivalry of two jerks in a sport I don't particularly care for into an epic battle of Greek proportions is the high art of movie making. Breathtaking imagery (probably even more so if you are more into F1 than I am), awesome actors.
While Gravity is the ultimate Space movie for Space enthusiasts and everyone else, Rush is the ultimate car movie for you. An everybody else.

While I almost never see movies in the theater, I have debated seeing both of these on the big screen for the full experience.

Same boat here due to small kids. We figured out a way to see Rush. It was worth it. All reports are saying that Gravity in 3D is amazing. Both movies require the uber geek to switch off a bit, but it is worth doing.
Find a theater where serious moviegoers go. One of my coworkers went to see Gravity at a breakfast showing at a movie tavern to ensure the place wasn't filled with ass clowns.

Rush is amazing, but the best parts of it are aural. If you have a good home sound system it can wait. Gravity on the other hand.... I've never witnessed a movie experience like that ever. I saw the 3d imax, and was in awe the entire time. People always go on about how movies should be "experienced" in the theater, but I never got it really. Movies like Gravity are truly an experience, and there aren't many like it. Probably the closest would be seeing a 70mm film at a cinerama, like Grand Prix, 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Ben-Hur.
