We lost 'literally'. Let's not lose this, too.

I'm young, but so out of the loop that I've heard songs and even listen to songs referring to "ratchet", but literally (lol) have no idea what it means.

Er, I've called socket wrenches "ratchet handle"s or "rachet"s probably since I was nine, and me father before me. Is the issue raised here that ratchet is being used for yet another meaning?

ratchet is meant to be wretched

I really hate how stupid this world is becoming. Can we please just start slapping the marbles out of people's mouths?

Yeah, it's being used to describe certain women with a negative connotation.

It's just slang. Don't worry too much about it. It will fade in a few years, and then serve as an occasional punchline/reference in popular media until everyone who used it turns 50.

What happened to "literally" is a far greater tragedy, and one that might literally never be undone.

I saw another comment indicating that it's a not-quite-all-there version of "wretched"? Some people need to be thesaurused until they bleed.

socket wrench doesn't mean it has a ratcheting action, socket denotes the way the wrench attaches to the nut/bolt, the ratchet is the action that allows it to spin freely in one direction.

it literally bothers me that they are saying they are the same :P

I feel weird that I'm 20 but act so old....Kid I work with is 25 or so and 10 thousand times more immature than me, and more half witted too....Doesn't understand how to act in front of customers, doesn't understand you can't cuss in the lobby when a customer is present....

I'm an old soul. Always have been. I blame it on us living out in the middle of the country, where I had no younger kids around. So I was always around my dad and all of his friends, and just kind of skipped past the whole 13-25 maturity level and went straight to the 30s.

I even read the newspaper on sunday mornings. Now if only I owned a Grand Marquis I'd fit the bill completely.

When I was 18 I had a Mercury Cougar. It was a 95...so old man car, then came the Corolla, then both the Crown Vics, then ANOTHER Corolla......Now the Cobalt.

One of those cars is far from being an old man car.

And I was forced to grow fast. When I was 15 (5 years ago to the day actually) my mom passed away. So when I moved in with my grandma she kind of raised me old school.

Ohh wow, I'm sorry to hear that man. My dad passed away when I was 17, so I know how that can definitely change your lifestyle pretty quickly.

But hey, like you said, at least we're not the ones who will look back in disappointment on how ridiculous we acted. Wish I could say the same for 95% of the populace our age.

I can look back and say "Holy shit that was awesome, I don't regret it"

As opposed to most of my friends would say "I regret ever doing that"

I mean I acted ridiculous, but the way I did it was something else that people respect and love haha

But I think everyone has acted that way, its just down to regretting it or not.

A ratchet is a tool with a handle and a clicky part. A socket is what you attach to the ratchet.

If you're helping me in the garage and give me some speech that "ratchet" is an incorrect term, I'll cut off your beer supply.

I'm only 25 and I didn't know about this til a few days ago. I was texting a new female friend I had met at work to see if she wanted to grab a meal and she said something about her friend being ratchet. So I asked her why she was calling her friend a wrench. She then asked me WTF do I mean, wrench? Something was obviously wrong so I hit up the old urban dictionary. If anyone wants to take this bucket off my hands, have at it. I aint going back to that well.
