Would hooking up the STi 6-speed to the normal WRX engine yield any kind of MPG gains? I know performance would drop a couple tenths here an there, but I've always wondered what kind of benefits could be found in something like that.

Would you also want the Sti transfer case and all the extras too? Or just the extra gear? (PS I don't have any idea but interested nonetheless). I wish I had another gera, even if it was only overdrive.

Don't know about mileage, but it would be totally worth it for the feel alone. The 6-speed is miles ahead of the 5 in every respect.

Depending on the gearing, but generally another gear would give you better MPGs on the highway. Many old cars are upgraded from a 4 to a 5 when modernized a bit, drops the RPMs. I put a later year Mercedes rear end in my diesel for better gearing on the highway because I can't get any more transmission/gears added or mated.

Later Subarus have taller gears.Looks like a gear swap and driveshaft might get you where you want without changing the tranny.

MPG gains would be minimal if at all, but the 6spd is so much better than the 5spd that it is worth swapping in for any reason really.
