(I don't drink), but I took !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! 's option and checked the marks.

EJ22 in '98 OBS Looking for advice again, don't want to run the car for further diagnosis without some backup, because if it is a timing issue that's just going to make things worse.

Took off all the covers, and lined the centre cog until its mark was at the top, the left and right gears appear to be lined up so their marks are at the top of the gear. Hard to tell from the pics, because I obviously can't get the camera straight on, but your thoughts?

Options: A: put it all back together and check for some nonsense wiring or vacuum or other that I missed and retry starting the car. B: leave all the covers off and have second set of eyes agree on the gears lining up. C: rotate the 28 (or whatever) rotations until the belt markings line up to further confirm the timing is right.

First Pic: Passenger's side cam gear

Second Pic: Centre gear

Third Pic: Driver's side cam gear

edit: now with video of first startup that led me to be concerned about timing issue

Count the teeth. If you don't have the belt with all the marks (should have gotten that one. If you ever do a belt change again, let me know. I found a place that sells the good stuff for dirt cheap), then you have to count teeth. I counted teeth even after the marks. Lemme find the link that tells the correct teeth. What makes it frustrating is that I did the EJ25 and my current 07 Impreza, so neither are the same as yours.

I didn't do this one, it has the marks they just no longer line up, unless I rotate a bajillion times to try to get it to line up, but that risks more damage if it is off. Counting teeth seems a reasonable, if annoying task. thanks

At least its only a two-cam. Take the belt off, line up the marks, check check check again, and put it back together.

Yeah, just be careful, you're probably working with an interference motor...

been considering this, but I've been told never to reuse a tensioner. but if push comes to shove, I literally all the way there at this point
