Can somebody explain how European(?) ball hitches work. They look very different from anything I see in the US.

I'm trying to find you something but google is being a bitch about it.
EDIT : Let's try this :
You basicly put the "ball" into the "thing" at the end. Then you pull the lever, it locks the whole thing so it does no vertical movement.
I kinda lack the vocabulary to be more "precise" about it, but it's really simple.

I lack the vocabulary myself, but I found a good picture:
To connect the trailor to the hitch you lift it on top of the ball, pull up the lever on the trailor which will let it slide onto the ball. The lever is connected to a locking mechanism so once you put it back down it's connected to the ball with no lateral movement.
