After hitting it big with Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966, and despite her !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to the Lord to buy her a Mercedes Benz, Janis Joplin plunked down about $3500 for a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . After all, it's what all her friends were driving, according to her hit song. With the Porsche originally sporting a simple coat of white paint, Joplin asked Big Brother roadie and friend Dave Richards to give it a custom paint job more appropriate for Haight-Ashbury. Once, the car was stolen and rattle-canned gray, but Joplin recovered it and had a body shop restore Richards' original artwork. Several replicas have been built since those heady days, but the original resides in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
