I have soot in the now-removed header. Any tips I should know before trying to flush it out? Is just straight water alright if I let it dry thoroughly before reinstalling? The outside could use some rustproofing as well, but I am going to wait on that a bit until I can do the manifold at the same time.

You'll probably need something more solventy. Throttle body/Carburetor cleaner spray? Maybe brake cleaner?
