It's a globalisation of Ford Europe's "Kinetic Design" styling. They probably swapped them round because big main grilles are in now. That's all it is. They're not copying anyone.
It's also true of the Focus ST and the Mk.7 Fiesta, originally a Europe-only car.

I've had to keep telling people! Hopefully a separate post about it will raise awareness.

Reminds me of another thing Ford did to refresh the design of their utility lineup in North America. They just flipped the lights upside down.

It's quite a lazy upgrade/refresh. I'm wondering how comparable the old and new Mondeos will be, as it's more than a facelift. I prefer the old style, 'cus I own one. DWagon style.

I saw a hatchback one at Goodwood and it does look like a facelift all-round, even though it's on a new or different platform. They weren't letting people sit in it, though. When they finally start building it in Europe and 400 road tests all happen in a fortnight, I'll be reading with interest.

its ironic that is has no edges . audis not as good as bmw y didnt u get m3?

That's what made me think it's more than a facelift. It's taking them so long to release it, originally I thought it was coming out last year, now it's late 2014. The Mondeo doesn't seem to be doing that well since 2010, the Focus seems to be taking over. So if they don't make it pretty amazing, I can't see the tide turning for it. They should still make an awd, diesel, estate, just for me!

I think the delay was over strikes at the factory in Genk, Belgium where they make the Galaxy and other models.

This is the greatest thread on the internet. Bravo.

There is that post. I totally agree I was more just showing ford has had this grill before in their line up and the shape is kind of common, there is probably even something that another auto maker used that they liked, best form of flattery.
there it is on a Austin .
Truly it's the fish mouth grill design used by lots of people. Just like in the Futrura concept car that became the bat mobiles daddy.
Ford’s lead stylist Bill Schmidt who was inspired by manta rays and mako sharks he had seen while scuba diving, the Futura’s body was built entirely at the Ghia Body Works in Turin, Italy, in 1954 and affixed to an experimental Lincoln Mark II chassis made three years before the first Mark IIs were sold. So there are probably many people that likes that look from nature and but it into their design. So they are all just coping nature that happens a lot the human imagination is limitless.

Aren't they shutting Genk down for good, and moving Mondeo production to another factory even though the Genk factory was already preparing for the new Mondeo? Hence the delay? I might be misinformed, but I thought this was the major reason.

I can't say I've been keeping tabs on it. Has it really got that bad?

I just checked it; late 2012 they announced they'll be closing Genk in 2014. Overcapacity, or so they say. It's been in the news here as Genk is very close to the Dutch border.

Looks like an Aston to me :-P
Reverse-GIS'ing tells me it's actually a Siata 208CS Balbo Coupé , a rebodied Fiat 8V or some such like from the early '50s.
Anyway, it's true that many people take inspirations from similar things or just happen to end up with something that could be compared to an existing product. As someone studying Automotive Design I see it all the time in past works on display or something me or a classmate has sketched.
As for "fish face" and "inspired by nature", certainly I always thought catfish when I saw the facelifted Focus around:

I see. Our Galaxy was made in Genk. It really makes you think...
Quite what it makes me think, I have no idea. So are they building it in a different European factory or do we get *shudder* US-built ones?
![]() 10/05/2013 at 17:36 |
|
No, luckily no US built cars. The site I read said they were moving production to Spain.

Oh yes I was referring to my post with the 59 thunderbird. Sorry should of clarified. I put the Austin in just as reference. Our post are titled the same. Ha

Oh I know, but that car you posted in your comment looks like an Aston Martin, not an Austin. I was being pedantic.
And yes, I may have borrowed your title ;-)

As long as it was a mistake that's OK! I'm irrationally bugged by people saying Austin Martin. Besides, I learned about the Siata as a result. It's very pretty.
