The first day of the workshop was today. It's been pretty useful so far. Lots of tips and ideas I'll be incorporating into my practice. Not as much theory based, but more practical application of assessment tools. The Driving assessment portion was quite interesting. To date, there really is no clinical cognitive assessment that has any decent level of predictive value as to when someone will likely be unsafe behind the wheel. Road tests seem to still be the gold standard.

On the plus side, I did find out that I have the medical credentials to recommend the transportation ministry suspend someones license. That in itself was worth the price of admission to the workshop.

Are you a medical doctor? If so, it would add to my survey of occupations that I did a few weeks ago. Let me know.

Can you guys come up with ways to help, or at least contain, the just plain stupid that walk amongst us?

I've been thinking of a few ways of better assessing cognitive capasity as it relates to driving. I've got some ideas. However, in the words of the immortal (or immoral) George Carlin, “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.”

The issue is vastly more complicated that simply developing a cognitive assessment tool that accurately predicts driving ability based on cognitive capacity. But I shall fight the good fight and see what I can do.
