OMG, Thanks for this. It is such a easy concept and people just don't get them. They have been putting them all over my state and every idiot stops when they get to it. They can not grasp the concept that if you enter it at the same time you will not hit each other unless you enter with a car directly in front of you. I have to use one twice a day or more if I go other places, and its like lets see how many idiots are going to stop when there are no cars coming, my horn is going to wear out because of these things. the best is when you see Semis just keep going straight like yup the middle is just a speed bump.

The flip side of that coin is that traffic engineers are sometimes putting them where they really don't belong because they are the hip thing in their circles. So to speak. I'm thinking of a highway close to where a live that's intersected by a less traveled road. They stuck one in there with no regard to traffic patterns or the fact that farm machinery would need to get through it. After spending the money to build it they had to go back and redo it. Silly. And I'm 100% with you on the clowns who stop when there is no reason to.

It's funny because the French experimented with simply removing stop signs from 4 ways as well. The logic is the same, traffic entering the junction yields to traffic in the junction. The difference is that a roundabout allows what would be turning traffic to do so without delaying other vehicles... the draw back is that the area consumed is massively increased per road added and works best with fewer exit/entrance options.

Not just the stopping fools...but the poor befuddled elderly women who KNOW they want that road to the left and...turn left into the roundabout. Terrifying. But I love roundabouts and detest 4 way stops.

It's strange that 4 way stops are compared to roundabouts and not lighted intersections. A 4 way stop is not necessarily used in the same place a round about might be to justify the increased cost of a roundabout. For instance 4 way stops are used where there is low traffic volume and low space. Roundabouts are used much like freeway junctions. As soon as there is a heavy traffic situation the intersection is regulated with lights or converted to a 1 or 2 way stop from 4 way. Likewise, if traffic gets high enough it gets full light regulation or something like a roundabout.
That's why there are no countries that just use any one specific type of traffic regulation.

Yea the one I frequent most is kind of bad placement for big trucks and its a double one so i make it through one and get stopped at the next one.

Not necessarily true. I lived in Australia for a year and they had roundabouts in many places where we have 4 way stops in the US. Their setup was actually very ideal. They used traffic lights in the bigger or heavy traffic intersections and roundabouts in the lower volume intersections. It made driving so enjoyable because you weren't constantly coming to a full stop when traffic was light.

Thank you for this, it was awesome. I have always said roundabouts where better than 4 way stops in many cases but I never had proof.
There were three huge advantages that this video forgot to mention:
1. Energy savings - when roundabouts are used instead of 4 way intersections in low-traffic areas motorists save energy. If there is no traffic in the roundabout you don't have to come to a complete stop, you just slow down. And it's really fun in a sports car or sports sedan as you go through the roundabout a bit quicker :)
2. Safety - motorists blowing through stop signs create a dangerous situation for others. But roundabouts force people to slow down a bit when entering the intersection.
3. Wear on your vehicle - it's better to have to slow down for roundabouts than come to complete stops. Constant full stops wear your brakes.
