Don't they already make that in Japan? I remember someone posting a robotech/toyota crossover commercial for some kind of 4D hatch a while back...

I love hatchbacks as much as any good Jalop, but no. Please don't Toyota. We had to suffer the Matrix for long enough.

Basing a hatch off a platform as old as the Corolla is not the definition of "Things I need more of in my life."

I don't understand why the corolla gets so much hate on here. I've driven the late '90s variant, and it was sprightly and (dare I say?) miata-esque in low speed handling. There was pretty good steering feel and sufficient horsepower. Even the weight distribution wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
It's ugly and beige, but wasn't the Volvo 240 we all know and love once considered "ugly and beige"?

Having driven the late 90s frog eyed EU Corolla I couldn't disagree more, excluding the first few words in your last paragraph. As a transportation appliance it was perfect, as everything else it was absolutely horrendous. At the time I was always happy when I could drive my old mk2 VW Golf again, which was a decade older (15 year older design), had 2/3 the horsepower (or half) and 6 times the mileage. This wasn't because the Golf was such a great car, it was because the Corolla was so horribly devoid of any character, any type of flavor.

Having seen the pictured Corolla hatchback and wagon in person as they were released in Europe (as the Auris) some time ago my guess is that these new Corollas are similar in character to the one I've driven. It might be a local thing, but it seems like 95% of these have the Prius drive train, which in itself could tell you all you need to know.

This I don't get:

(about hatchbacks) "We are watching the competitors very closely on that," Holdridge said. "We will (not) be first to the market obviously, and we might now even be second. But we will watch that market and see where it goes."

I don't know much about the US market, but: Ford Focus, VW Golf, Hyundai Elantra, Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, Subaru Impreze WRX, Mazda 3. So they won't even be sixth even if they wanted to. Weird really, how few options there are. I might be missing one or two, but still. In Europe there are about 25 brands that offer one, and that's excluding subcompacts and CUVs (looking at you Nissan). Most of these brands are available in the US as well.

I think it was just an expression, rather than factual talking, if hatchback sales continue to grow, they will do something about it, but many people would just go for a crossover.
