Today I took my BRZ in for maintenance (20,500 mi) at Galpin Subaru Valencia, CA. In the showroom is this pristine 360 which I had to share with anyone who'll listen or view. It has a bit less room inside than the BRZ, 118" long, 925 lb curb weight....

360 stand for engine displacement? Or maybe horsepower. I could believe 360hp. . .

356cc of 2-stroke horror....
The first U.S. Subaru
is the 360.
This very small rear wheel drive minicar had a 2-stroke, 25 horsepower 356 cc engine (thus the 360 name), weighed under 1000 pounds, got 66.3 mpg, went 0-50 in over 37 seconds. and cost $1,297 + prep.
It came in a few models: 2 door sedan, then the "Young S" 2 dr sedan, minivan (that's me in the white 5 door van below), a truck version, and even a mini race car too. There may have been as many as 10,500 (8,300 sedan, 2,200 van) of these imported through 1969, though they weren't exactly a best seller.

360cc displacement. Also a tax category, 360cc or lower, so many tiny cars from Japan had a 360 label.

My local dealer (Becker Subaru of Allentown) has one, too. They sure are odd little things.
One of my coworkers bought a Sambar pickup last year, which I find even more interesting than the 360. Think Corvair Rampside, but much smaller.

I used to drive the cars at Malibu Grand Prix - in Van Nuys or Sepulveda - back in the 70's. They had a fiberglass body on the Subie 360 chassis and drivetrain. Malcolm Bricklin was stuck with 3000 of these POS and converted them to go-carts. This video brings back the memories of the racket they made. Don't remember the flames though....

Would you trade your BRZ for it?
Absolutely no reflection on the BRZ, but my answer would be yes.

What a 360hp 360 might look like. Just 114 from a Ninja 900.

I'm still waiting to see one in real life.

I see them sometimes here in Japan, I know where one is sitting in a garage too. The US imports rusted badly as well and didn't catch on from when I understand. What I want is a Carol coupe, air cooled rear engine Mazda! That and a Cosmo. If I see a nice one for sale here I might have to get it.

Oh wow. I expect the shells are long long gone. Good thing to look out for, though. Thanks.

From what I hear on the internet, there wouldn't be any noticeable power loss if he did trade. /amirite?

I'm more interested in how you've amassed so many miles on the BRZ already.

Purchased the car in July last year. Live in the mountains 25 to 50 miles to my offices. Also taken a few long (>1000 mile) trips.

In the early 1970s an elderly man in my grandmother's tiny town in northeastern NC had a pair of 360s...a white one and an egg-yolk yellow one. He'd potter all over town in the things. I suspect they're what fired my interest in tiny weird cars...
