Yes, you read that right... No, this isn't the F150 ecoboost pickup. No I'm not smoking a bong full of salvia. Come read about this seldom heard concept truck of the 90's after the break!
I have been a fan of Ford's first and second gen explorers for a long time now. For a brief moment of my life I even owned a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with my brother. I like to think I know a good amount of info about the Ranger Based Vehicles, so it came to my surprise when I just heard about this concept explorer from 1998.
The 1998 Tremor concept was based on the (at the time) current explorer, which was the 1995-2001 era of explorer. This was the last era of the RBV explorer. You could get it with a 4.0 Cologne OHV V6, a 4.0 SOHC Cologne V6, or a 5.0L Windsor V8. But a second gen explorer with a modular V8? Never!
Ford never actually made a sport truck out of the explorer. Some of you may remember the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , or the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which was great as a concept but nothing more than an appearance package in production. But apparently back in 1997, Ford came out with this radical concept for a sport truck version of the explorer.
It featured a 4.6L 5V V8. Let me say that again, 4.6L FIVE Valve V8. (You know, like Audi does). Ford teamed up with Yamaha (who did the engines in the taurus SHO) to come up with these heads for the modular V8. It took the compression from 9.85:1 to 10.5:1. Featuring a twin 70mm throttle body, and dual spray high flow injectors, this engine put out 380HP @ 6400RPM and 350TQ @ 4000rpm. For comparison purposes, a 1996-98 Ford Mustang Cobra made 305hp, and a 93-98 Lincoln Mark Viii made 290HP in LSC form.
It gets better though, as the engine wasn't the only unique piece of this concept truck. Ford backed this engine with the tried and true 4R70W using a torque converter from the Mark Viii. They also retained the V8 explorers all wheel drive system (not to be confused with the 4wd system of the v6 explorers). For the back, Ford ditched the standard 8.8" solid axle, and completely re-engineered the back half of the explorer frame to accept a MN12 Thunderbird Independent Rear Suspension. A Mark Viii rear end with airbags was considered but scrapped due to time constraints. Engineers did keep the aluminum diff houisng from the Mark Viii which replaced the Thunderbirds cast iron housing. They installed 4.10 gears in the Mark Viii housing and stuck the IRS in place.
To make this truck stop and handle, Ford fitted 13" vented front rotors from the 1995 Mustang Cobra R, and kept the Thunderbirds vented rotors for the rear. They fitted 19" wheels with 245/60/19 Goodyear Tires.
Its a shame this was never produced. Like the original Sport Trac Adrenalin concept (which had a 4V Supercharged V8), the Tremor looks like it was an incredible concept in its day. On paper the truck should have been good for 0-60's somewhere in the 6 second range, and 1/4 mile runs in under 15 seconds. That would roughly put it in the territory of a second generation Ford Lightning F150, which didn't come out until 1999.
As with most concepts, most times the styling cues will be a tip towards future generations of the vehicle. In this case, I believe this truck was a hint at the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The third gen ditched the RBV platform, gained a 4.6L 2V modular V8, a 5spd transmission, and an IRS. I mean hell, they even look similar!

If anyone has any information to share, feel free to share. I tried looking for pictures of the engine, or the interior, or anything else, but I can't find a ton of information about this truck.

Thanks for finding this. I was trying for the life of me a few weeks ago, tried to remember the name of this because it was relevant to something on Jalop, and I wanted to share it, all I could remember was how the center console was molded all the way up the middle from the front to the middle of the rear seats. still cant find that rendering of it, probably was in a magazine.

Apparently goodyear built these for the explorer. With tow package second gens you could get goodyear wrangler RT/S tires (my brothers 98 had these). They didn't explode, but God damn did they suck. The only upside was they lasted forever, but the down side to that is you are stuck with shitty, expensive tires for a long time.

I was thinking about this exact vehicle not more than a week ago, but couldn't for the life of me remember what it was called. Outside of the neat0 engine goodies and the way-cool IRS I seem to also recall one of the lucky journo-types who actually got to drive the beast saying that it had an absolutely straight pipe exhaust that just roared like a pissed-off kodiak bear.

Oh I know, the BFG KDWS tires that came stock my marauder were junk IMO, and my bronco came factory with the wrangler RT/S's, which I already voiced my opinion on. They are all general purpose all season tires, so thats usually why. All seasons aren't made to be great at anything, just okay at most things.

Ford makes so many great concepts that don't make it to production. Yes, the GT and Thunderbird were pretty darn close to production models, but vehicles like the GT90, Cobra, 2004 Lightning, Bronco, 427, Forty-Nine, Desert Excursion, Super Chief, Mighty Tonka, etc, and the Lincoln Continental Concept should have been made, if only in limited numbers.

That kinda sounds like the Lincoln Aviator that was around. They had the NA version of the DOHC 4.6 based on the cobra motor. They had the IRS and was available in AWD. All fancy Lincoln leather and was available with 4 captains chairs and a bench 3rd row. They were fast for a truck. I also got to see one reach a displayed fuel economy of 6.7 MPG on the dash display. They were fun trucks to drive.

I am getting closer to that image/sketch this at least describes it and I Am seeing a lot of similar designs but not just it.
Purposeful Interior
The Explorer is well-known for its interior packaging, and the Tremor concept follows this tradition but with a more performance-oriented theme. Four custom leather-covered Lear bucket seats hold the driver and three passengers firmly yet comfortably in position during even the roughest off-road driving. Grab handles are located near each seat for when the going really gets tough.
A full-length center console extends from the instrument panel to the rear bucket seats and houses the floor-mounted shifter, with storage space for a telephone. A new Garmin global positioning system is integrated into the instrument panel but is easily removed to be used outside the vehicle. Rear passengers have their own climate controls and an armrest, first seen in the Ford Taurus, that can be folded down to provide additional storage space.
For added convenience, the rear seats fold flat for cargo-carrying capacity. The cargo area floor is covered in a durable, non-slip rubber matting for maximum utility and durability.
While Tremor is only a concept at this stage, it has been engineered as a fully driveable prototype. The Ford Tremor performance SUV will be shown at auto shows throughout the year.

Ditch the mid/late 90's styling and give it a early 90's explorer body and I'd rock it. I bleed blue everyday, but I can't stand jellybean styling that plagued every auto manufacturer in that era. I've been thinking about sport SUV's all week, got a '91 Volvo 940 Turbo Wagon to drive at work, and I've been thinking this is what a Cherokee would be like If I lowered it, except better with an inline six versus the turbo 4.

Yes, they do make some good stuff today. Their most annoying thing to hot rodders is one reason why they do so well now, they don't dwell on the past or try to make their stuff backwards compatible.
That being said, I'm still sad they didn't pursue the crazy ideas. This 5V 4.6 could have been great for a low volume halo car (or SUV).

On the one hand: everything you said. Awesome concept.
On the other: everything that's wrong with Ford's post-Windsor V8 strategy.
Oh, yes, what we need, and want, in a heavy, AWD SUV is a V8 with it's torque peak moved to the high heavens.
Let's look at a parallel - the 5v 4AGE from Toyota. That 'Levin' motor, was it torquier than the 4v 4AGE? No, and I'd bet money the torque peak moved even higher than it already was.
Now, we're talking a V8 that has to do triple duty, as GM's LS engine does - sports/muscle car engine, luxury V8, and - this is important - TRUCK ENGINE.
Low end torque matters. Just compare a 9C1 to a P71. 260hp to 250, granted, but in these heavier sedans the 330lb ft of torque at low rpms is what makes the difference - the Chevy isn't just faster, it's heavier, too.
15 seconds with 380 horses and AWD? Cute. I built a Roadmaster with a mildly modded LT1 good for - I'd estimate - minimum 285, max 300hp. I could easily stomp the guts out of a Mini S Turbo, which is also a 15 second car. Stock 94-96 Impala SS would run 15 flat.
Again, this is what's wrong with Ford's V8 strategy - they didn't have a really good truck V8 until the 6.2l - guess where they got that displacement from? The 5.0 is really not as cool as you'd think in such a heavy truck - most reviewers noted 'the power is the opposite of where you'd want it in a truck'.
This is an illustration - when all the 'intelligent' folk think Chevy should be going smaller, DOHC V8 - guess what? The ZR1 is faster than almost all of the cars you think are 'better'. So, likely, is the outgoing Z06. Torque matters. Where it occurs in the powerband matters, particularly if you want it to have good manners around town or pull double duty as a truck motor. At best Ford's OHC/DOHC V8s can equal Chevy and Dodge's OHV designs. No great advantage is secured by the 'better' DOHC setup, yet many are aware of the advantages the LS has over smaller inside, larger outside competitor's V8s.
There's a reason the Northstar was phased out - frankly with the LS in it's arsenal, the 'Star was superfluous. Nowadays it gives up nothing to a DOHC motor in smoothness or NVH, something I'm sure Rolls Royce owners have known for years.
I used to think GM was making a mistake, and Ford was making 'the new V8', but turns out I had it backward, and my dad wasn't so dumb after all.
If 15 seconds is all it could manage no wonder they left it as a concept - the Typhoon had it beat almost a decade earlier - with a V6! And not long after GM would have the 6.0 and then 6.2l truck V8s, too, with the same horsepower and better torque with no goofy 5V heads.
Cool truck - I'm not saying it's not or wouldn't be fun and unique. But again, it does illustrate why American V8s are the way they are, at least at GM and Chrysler.

10/04/2013 at 00:13 | 0 |
I don't think the 5.4 was necessarily a bad V8 in a truck, it certainly had more low end. The 6.8 V10 was a good truck motor for sure.
The windsors were good engines, but its pretty bad that my SEFI 5.8L rivals that of a TBI 350. A vortec 350 was like what, 275hp? My 96 bronco makes 210. I couldn't even being to imagine this truck with a 302 in it.

American automakers could still make some outrageous performance cars, if they didn't burn gasoline. Yes backwards compatibility is a pain in today's world. And if only it didn't come with an automatic, as I suspect this SUV would melt a ford auto trans if you lit it up.

Ford has a way of just shitting on good ideas, period. The Lincoln LS could have continued on...the current Jag XF uses the same chassis. And guess what Lincoln told C&D when they asked if they would put a manual in the car? they told them that they didn't have one strong enough to handle the torque..The same company that makes the Mustang...
Oh, and let's not forget that the original Thunderbird was a Corvette competitor. So, what did they do with it when they brought it back? They made a retro cruiser out of it (using the same DEW98 platform as the LS).

Either go efi, or get the offenhausen 4bbl intake. Either way, get the EFI engine manifolds. The carb engine, its one giant manifold, on the EFI engine its two manifolds that join into one on the Y pipe. You'll notice a bump in power by swapping to the newer manifolds.

I want that shifter in my Ranger. Right now.
Then it could match my Mustang's one :)

How much did this thing weigh? The brake specs don't seem up to the task of stopping this behemoth.

Yeah, but putting a blower on it almost feels like cheating. I'm a huge fan of NA, when it can be done, and in this case, it definitely could have been done.

I remember reading about this in a Popular Mechanics. That issue also had a Dodge T Rex and some other specialty and concept trucks and SUVs. I wanted the Tremor bad.

Is it just me or does that front clip look an awful lot like a first gen Escape?

the concept was such a cool truck, I really wish it followed through that way. The second generation adrenaline was still a good looking truck though, I've seen a few supercharged ones.

I think NA requires cubes, I know my 4.6 doesn't have the cubes.

I'd estimate over 5000lbs at least, but hell the brakes on my bronco are smaller than on this thing. 13" brembos are pretty beefy.

Explorers are the worst cars on the road. They are always in total disrepair and even brand new they were crude and drove like shit. The Explorer is literally a symbol of what is wrong with the American car buying public.

I need those heads—this goes far beyond want. Why does Yamaha not have a permanent office inside Ford's motor division? I wonder if we had a kickstarter campaign we could convince Yamaha to do a limited run??

I remember a buddy got an expedition Eddie Bauer when they first come out and it was really cool at this time. This would have trumped that IMO.

we had a 98 5.4 XLT expedition. I remember the dealership having a expedition with an integrated Nintendo 64 system. To this day I have never seen another one of those.

Ford had a few neat toys from that era that had Yamaha built items. I saw this Exploder at Ford Dearborn Proving Grounds along with an SHO Windstar. Yes, they stuffed an SHO Yamaha motor in a Windstar! I think there was at least 2!
At the time Ford had to many SHO motors due to low production numbers for the SHO Taurus, so they began stuffing the motors in anything that had a similar chassis, and that was the Windstar! I hear that a few other cars got the motor but non ever got as far as this Exploder.

Same. I'll do some research, I cant remember if it was a test or just one of those segments they'd do for the concept cars. I'm thinking its the latter though which is sad.

And it's not like they don't already have an existing V-10. They could just pull their 6.8L modular V10 (used in the Super Heavy Duty trucks) right off the shelf and modify it.

One thing I feel they should have made but never did, was the SVT Thunder. Aka Lightning Expedition.

they were sweet rides in the day...and i actually prefer the gen-1 versus any that came after. an N64 expedition should be kept a secret...or someone in FL will make it a DONK!!
