You don't even need to go back to the 70s, you can buy one new today. Not sure if they import to the States, but you can definitely get new ones in the UK for ~£10k.

Also, we've found a replacement RHD steering box for ours so that should be on the road sooner rather than later.

No need for a time machine. We found our 1975 Lada 2103 in Estonia.

Yep, I'm just expressing a liking for the very silly Zeitgeist expressed in the ad, or as some would say "the feels". Which isn't to say I don't want a 70's Niva, it'll just probably be a while before it's worth any serious exploration past my current projects. Also, there's the whole priority order of Russian 4wds, where if easily obtained a UAZ 452 is higher on my list for "want" if way less practical.

US import regs can bite me vis-a-vis the new ones, but the old Nivas are over 25, so importable. That's what I'd want, anyway.

You can bring one over from Canada, providing the Northern Ontario guys who use them are willing to give them up. Here's one example.
