Are you a snob when you don't want to sleep in your car?

I was just watching After/Drive and the topic of 'low-budget' trips to races comes up. Bill Caswell mentions 'I'm like the readers and sleep in my car'. I think there is quite a difference between a 4-star hotel and sleeping in a car, which I don't think I'd ever do if I needed to drive for 10 hours to get to a race.

Depends on the car, I had no issues when I drove one of these for a summer

In Monaco, there may not be a difference between a 4-star hotel and a car

I've done it twice when I was younger. Had a hell of a time then. Won't do it now unless absolutely necessary. I'm short but it kills my back.

Depends on the car. My wife and I drove cross-country last year in a Wrangler Unlimited (4-door) and slept in it at camgrounds and truck-stops a few nights to save some money. With the seats permanently down and a big futon mattress it was quite comfortable. The Range Rover Sport we had before that we camped in as well and the Suburban we have now would obviously make for a nice sleeping environment. That Fiesta ST up there....hmm, not sure. Guess it depends on how tired I was, a $45 hotel room would be a lot more comfortable.

I'd sleep in my car if I had to, but I'd rather bring a tent if that's a possibility. Although a mattress in the back of a wagon sounds comfortable.

I've slept in the front seat of an old Chevy Van before, but I wasn't sober.. Not sure what was worse, the smell of five other teenagers the day after, or the lack of legroom..

Maybe, I'd definitely check things like airbnb/couchsurfing in the area though ;-)

I'd do it if that's what needed to be done. I've done it in the past. Road trip, small town, no rooms left. If there is no place to sleep, what are you gonna do? Just try to avoid the local police.

Believe me, sleeping in a hotel room is, in most cases, is much better than sleeping in a car. Mostly because you got a toilet.

When the JGTC came to the US for the first time to race at California Speedway, me and two buddies slept in an Acura MDX in the parking lot of the mall out in Fontucky. It was a stupendous night with even a high speed car chase in the parking lot while we were trying to find a place to park. It was worth it, those JGTC machines are pretty fucking rad.

I've slept in my old car (Focus ZX-3) plenty of times. I used to keep a pillow in the backseat before I got my dog and that became her space. When I had a van I took the seats out in back and just kept pillows and blankets back there. It was nice being able to get shitfaced at a party and just crawl in the back and go to sleep.

Now I don't think I could comfortably sleep in my Miata. . . .

Sleeping in a car is overrated...at best. There is no shame in not doing it. I sleep better on a mat on the ground that I do in my car.

I've done it in my first car, a 2000 forester. Though for some horrible reason I chose to sleep on the drivers seat instead of just putting the seats down and actually having some space.

I would consider it a last resort, especially since I don't expect to be able to sleep all that comfortably in my FR-S.

Stuff was getting frenetic with my little brother and parents at home a while back, so I grabbed my baby and drove her a few blocks down the road in my suburb, and crashed. It was beyond comfortable. Those leather captains' chairs are nice.
