While Dumb, I am quite impressed at the Phantom's ability to smack into a building and recover so many times before finally falling out of the air. its a robust little guy.

HAHA! Sucks for them because all of the DJI products have become known to be utterly broken and useless. The slam into the building was likely the dreaded "flip of death" that they are now known for.

Regardless it seems like they were illegal to fly there, but funny to see it wasn't their fault either way.

We fly one of these at work and its honestly astounding what it can take. A notable example being one time we were in an indoor track facility and its "return home GPS" kicked in and took it full speed into a wall where it then bounced off and did a flip of death into the floor. It looks a little worse for wear, but it'll still fly... mostly.

how is this thing a drone? I thought it was a quadcopter. Doesn't a drone connotate some form of autonomy? Or is drone just a media buzzword that they couldn't stand no to use?

The flip of death is typically caused by the wookong m system while in GPS mode. It was a function of the GPS compass being poorly manufactured for a few runs before the issue was discovered and rectified. It typically happened for no rhyme or reason, not like seen here. Typically they flip 3 to 4 times in about 4 feet of altitude before careening into the ground. We had one of ours do it on one of our first flights, and a few clients that had the same experience, we helped discover the problem :)

Its a media buzzword for sure, and it made for some nice alliteration, but the phantom and many quad rotors are using some form of autonomy. As another commenter mentioned they do feature a return to home option and an auto land option, in addition to being GPS stabilized. Other than the capability to fly waypoints, the system in the Phantom is very similar to their higher costing autopilots.

Too bad they basically have told the customers who had it happen, on video too mind you, that they were screwed.

Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, it wasn't their best customer service thats for sure. We had a few high profile clients that we pushed dji to warranty the system, and they did finally after admitting fault and doing the recall.

So far, the new A2 system has proven to be reliable, but we have only been using it for 2 weeks now.
