My wife's friend bought a brand-new Jetta TDI earlier this year. Now it says it has catastrophic engine failure and the dealership doesn't know what's wrong.
I'm never going to be able to convince my wife to get a VW...

Gotta love German "engineering"
Next time get a Toyota :p
Now I REALLY wish GM would bring the Cruze hatch and wagon over here and offer the diesel on ALL Cruzes, not just the top LTZ.

oil?
wait? how did the Jetta tell you it had "catastrophic engine failure", was it being sarcastic? You can usually tell by its tone of voice....
also, don't worry, this had to be a 1st Gen Talking Jetta, tell your wife to wait for at least 2nd Gen and all the bugs are worked out.

Sorry, that made me laugh. Instant flashbacks to me sitting in my garage pulling codes on my laptop while talking to my 1.8t Wolfsburg asking why it kept telling me something that was impossible.

Question:
Is your wife's friend rather, um dense? Could they have possibly filled it with petrol instead of diesel?
It's been known to happen, as the It's-Just-A-Car crowd have bought them for the Emm Pee Gees, and then are clueless and fill them with petrol. I remember reading about it happening here a while ago.

That would manifest immediately though, not months later

this sorta thing happens to ALL cars, every brand ever made ever in forever land. Cars = bolts, nuts, parts, and fluids, THAT'S IT. It may be almost impossible to have the phrase "German quality" removed from Jalop minds, but its all the same BS with every car. Trust me dude, the dealer wants to fix your car, not only to milk for warranty money, but because its costing them to have your wifas car there sitting, reps wont allow it. That's why they have a tech support line. Dont believe everything the service adviser says. They spew the more shit than politicians lol. Patients buddy, nothing is impossible in the auto repair biz trust me. You'll get you car back soon.

*My wife's friend
My wife drives a Subaru named Jack, who is a 1998 Impreza Outback.
I wish I could buy my wife a Jetta TDI.

That was my very first thought, but not the case.

This was my first thought as well. But clearly not the case here.
