So some back story first. My brother is 24, and recently got a job working as an engineer in San Diego. He has friends in the LA area, as well as a girlfriend still in San Luis, so he does a decent amount of driving. He has a diesel truck, but wants to get something that is a little more daily drivable. His main requirements are, in no particular order: fun to drive, manual trans, practical, decent fuel mileage (high 20's to low 30's maybe?). He'd prefer a 4 door, but is open to 2 door coupes. He has about a 30 grand budget.
So far his "front runners" are either something like a Ford Focus ST or a 2010 Audi S4. I'm trying to push him towards one of the Toyobaru twins, but I think he believes they're too small of cars.
So oppo, what would you recommend? 30 grand, fun to drive, manual. Ya'll should be all over this.

All I can think of at the moment.
Edit: I wish I had 30 grand for a car and a good job!

A bit over budget, but the new 2014 GTI would fit the bill nicely, methinks:
Haven't wanted a GTI so badly since the MK I's and II's.
If that's too rich for his blood, then get a Wolfsburg edition with the gasoline engine, a 2013 GTI from dealers who want to make room for the new cars, or maybe one that's just come off lease (though a leased GTI would likely have been driven very, very hard. Be extra cautions with that one).

MS3? Not sure what fuel economy they get though.

Mid/upper-mid 30's highway, mid 20's city.

A used 328d, they might have come with a manual.

Better that I would have guessed. They've got an LSD right?

Just because the toybaru is getting alot of good press doesn't mean its perfect yet. Keep that in mind. Also, you can buy anything you want for 30k. srsly.

Yup. Still a healthy gob of torque steer though, even with the LSD.

Fiesta ST and save the rest of it for when Mountune sets up shop there and some new rubber.
