Yep, this is what happen when you live in a country that tends to be a bit disconnected from the rest of the world :D

Here is Axel Foley, interpreted by one of the most famous Japanese TV comedian, during the most viewed TV show of the year! Enjoy!

SBS here in Oz every year for NYE show “Dinner for one” some old lady who’s friends have all died but she’s too senile to realise so her butler plays the parts and eats and drinks all their food.

We should only change the imagery somewhat though. We’ve been telling kids ‘zwarte piet’ is black due to the soot of the chimney for many, many decades. It’s not explained to be as someone from African descent. So all we need to do is make the ‘black due to soot from the chimney’ part more believable. Make it look like dirt and not uniform pigment. And get rid of the colonial imagery. Done. Problem solved. Very little needs to change. It’s sad that people, on both sides, are so hysterical and can’t use reason.

Smh, stuff like this is why I’m a bit apprehensive about foreign travel. If they think that sort of shit is cool, how are they going to interact with me?

I’ve long theorized that racism is far more tolerated in places that never had to confront it (structurally/legally).

I’ve lived in AL and FL most of my life, but saw much more overt racism when living in CA and PA (and I’m white, so whatever little bit I noticed was probably the tip of the iceberg).

Not 10 minutes ago, I read a snippet in a Birmingham history book about how when the Freedom Rider pictures hit the Tokyo papers, ongoing business deals with the Alabama delegation were basically canceled over the perception of a hostile civil rights environment.

In the US blackface is an automatic no-go for obvious reasons (slavery, minstrel shows, Jim Crow.) it might be looked over in other countries ‘Celt the Netherlands has its own bit of ugly history with South Africa...

They lack the cultural and historical link to American blackface. It’s like a wig or a costume to them. Looking at the pictures there doesn’t seem to be any intent to mock, they’re merely trying to make the actor look like Eddy Murphy.

My point being: one shouldn’t judge the Japanese from an American cultural perspective. This tv program tells you nothing about how they’ll treat you, other than that you’ll stand out.

The fact you think anywhere in the US hasn’t had to deal with institutional and societal racism leads me to believe you’re a bit out of touch on the whole subject.

US businesses responded to the freedom riders in a similar manner. MLK had an FBI as the US gov viewed him as a subversive.

South Africa? Meh, those were settlers mostly and it was multiple centuries ago. Whatever happened afterwards was shameful but not as much on the Dutch (government). I’d argue Indonesia is a far more shameful part. Or the slave trade a bit longer ago.

Agreed about blackface. An obvious and utterly justified no-go in the US, but black facial paint outside of the US doesn’t automatically equal American blackface. People (not just Americans) tend to judge other cultures from their own narrow perspective, which is shallow and frequently wrong. If I were to use my own cultural perspective on American gun culture or intertwinement of religion in politics or, whatever, I’d be very harsh and I’d also be an arrogant asshole who doesn’t understand.

They ran the country until 1994 with apartheid lasting until 1991. that’s not “centuries ago.” they may have called themselves “Afrikaner” but they were quite still culturally Dutch.

I always liked those variety shows, I can’t understand most of it but when I’m at my in laws and I need something to do I love putting that on. If sumo is on I’m saved since I never miss a basho anyway.

Not really. They were as Dutch as naturally born Americans with an English name are British. Even the language is different, Afrikaans has split from Dutch a long time ago for good reason (lack of mingling) and as a Dutch speaker I certainly don’t understand Afrikaans (much). Don’t misunderstand me though, I’m not running away from all the atrocities the Dutch have committed. Hell, my grandfather was conscripted in the late 1940s and sent to Indonesia. Which doesn’t make me proud, at all (although it’s not his fault, being a conscript). But Apartheid? That’s on the South Africans, not the Dutch.

That’s the thing... Imagine you live in a country where you’ve never ever interacted with a blue guy... You know they exist. You’ve known it your entire life, but you’ve never talked to one or interacted with one before. How would you react the first time you see and actual blue guy?? It does sound stupid as fuck, but where I live in Japan (ie outside of big cities) it’s not that far from this lol...

People here often have no idea how to interact with foreigners... They just don’t know. So they won’t treat you badly... on the contrary! They’ll be all hear for your needs and what you have to say... but that also mean that they might try to show you their local funny guy who imitates Barack Obama really well hahaha :D
