We’re getting ready to put the house on the market very soon. In an effort to help the house show better, we’re putting furniture and stuff we don’t need for a more minimalist existence in a storage unit, and I’ve also made three runs to Goodwill to get rid of stuff we don’t need at all (also, the tax scam bill means itemizing next year may not be a given), and one of the things to go is the boom box. I don’t think it has played music since 2005ish.

My mother in law has a cheap Insignia (Best Buy house brand) CD boom box that we got her a couple years ago because whatever other CD player she had stopped working. When we visited her for Christmas, she asked me for help getting a newer, crappier CD boom box to work, because according to her, the Insignia one wasn’t working anymore.

The new one looked like something you’d see by the photo counter at Walgreen’s. It was so shitty it wouldn’t play any CDs, and the only thing “wrong” with the Insignia one was the 3-position mode switch (radio, CD, aux) had been switched to aux. I showed her the switch and told her to return the junk one that she had bought.

I still have the boom box I got when I was nine. Still works, too. Damn, I just realized it’s 27 years old. That’s older than at least half of Opponauts.

My 9-y-o boombox was a 2-tape Panasonic with high-speed dubbing. High. Speed!

And my tape collection consisted of Weird Al, Dire Straits, INXS, and Huey Lewis. Mostly Weird Al.
