Kinja'd!!!

My wife tells me that a bunch of cars in our neighborhood were broken into. All of them were locked and had keyless entry. There was no damage to the cars. Our van was not touched.

They think the keyless entry systems were hacked. Edmunds has this article about it. Anyone experienced this or know about it?

AFAIK, basically what they are doing is repeating the signal from your keys inside house, so it fools the keyless entry rolling code the key is nearby.

I live several floors above my car so I think I’m safe, lol.

Also I think some statistics suggests minivans are least likely to get broken into, a friend told me.

Maybe at some point, RFID shielded keyless entry cases would become a market, and I really don’t know about Tesla’s idea of using your phone as the key.

It’s unsurprising that minivans would be the least broken into. I could see people thinking they’re less likely to hold valuables.

Which is funny, because I imagine you could make a decent chunk of change selling car seats on Craigslist

We had a week or so of “activity” in my neighborhood a while back. Probably the tools for doing relay attacks are becoming cheaper and more common. It begs the question why we ever needed proximity keys in the first place, because now everyone needs a Faraday bag for their fobs to prevent theft of their belongings or car.

You also have to wonder what this will start doing to insurance rates. I consider my car to be in the technological sweet spot - keyed, but with an immobilizer in the key. Keyless proximity entry and engine start is just a step too far IMO, and once enough data is in I bet we see rates on those cars differ from others.

Vans have the worst resale in general and not a lot of parts value. Plus there’s always the chance you’ll accidentally be kidnaping a child in the back.

Did your van’s lack of theft interest initially relieve you, but also make you secretly a bit angry?

Cognitive minvan dissonance is a real thing.

Microwaves make good Faraday cages that radio signals can’t get into or out of.

And the back seats and floor are caked in goldfish crumbs and snot.

We also take care to not leave anything that looks valuable in the car. But that’s low tech common sense.

Just remember not to turn it on while they are in there.

Yes, and they suggest you could put your key in a faraday cage. But no one is going to that. We will go back to good ole keys first.

They just go for parked cars. The kids aren’t in danger. But no one thinks of minivans as worth anything.

I feel mine aren’t very ripe targets. They live in my garage (the garage seems like the easier target due to the relative simplicity of openers) and contain nothing of value. That said, it could definitely be done in a parking lot if you knew which cars to check...

I was thinking just find a broken mini microwave and cut the cord off, then put some 3M hooks inside!

There are fixes, but the manufacturers probably won’t put effort into them until there is enough publicity from consumer loses.

I would have thought so because I said I’d never get a minivan. But this is a really good car, and I like it. Which kind of worries me in another way.

We have been victims of kid pranks before in this neighborhood. They would open unlocked cars to get the clickers to open the garage doors and steal stupid stuff.

Minivans are OP.

- They blend in.
- They’re bigger on the inside.
- They’re actually pretty quick.
- Did I mention you can fit almost anything inside?

That’s a lot of why I like ours. It’s a fantastic road trip car. Since we got it, we have taken weekend road trips to learn about our state and have adventures.

When I was young, before my grandfather stopped driving, he had ended up leasing two different yet same minivans over the years. A nearly base model early 2000s Grand Caravan in bright cherry red, and a similar vintage Town and Country in powder blue.

According to my mother, the van would get out of its own way if you told it to.

I heard if you set the microwave running, it’ll recharge your key too. No more replacing batteries!
