I couldn’t end the year without buying one more car.

Kinja'd!!!

Luckily, my brother in law needed a new car since his current work car is falling to pieces.

We went through some ads, checked some prices, went to check out a nicely priced Hyundai i30 station wagon, and he bought it.

Nothing spectacular, just like the car itself.

Stats:
First registered 11/2009
1.6 crdi (90hp)
90.000km
12 months warranty
Trailer hitch
Very good condition
5.400€

Goal was a cheap, safe, reliable car.
It’s far from exciting, but hey, I got to go buy a car. A nice side effect is that my sister, nephew and niece won’t drive around in a car I consider more dangerous than my Chevy.

I owned an ‘11 Elantra Touring (US market i30SW) with the 2.0 petrol engine (because America), it was a great car. Super reliable, comfortable, not too quick, but handled very well, lots of room in the rear seat and hatch, good load handling, the suspension was tuned correctly so that it still felt nice with a full load. Great brakes too, except the damn drum-inside-a-disc parking brake was a PITA to replace the shoes on. I hauled more heavy, bulky, weird crap in that car than most pickup-truck owners do (including a lawn tractor INSIDE the car...), AND pissed off the WRX-Bros at Autocross. I kinda miss it. It was sort of the platonic ideal of a useful, efficient, reliable, non-boring car.

Just curious, how many cars did you buy this year?

For me: I bought a first Mégane RS that I brought back for title issues, then a 208 GTI, another Mégane RS, and a 505 V6 parts car.

I bought a Crossgolf for my parents, a Mazda 6 wagon for my sister’s boyfriend, an i30 wagon for my other sister’s husband.

So that’s 7, I’ll try to do better next year :)

It’s clear who you get the exciting cars for, haha.

That’s a decent number though , I bought exactly 0 haha.

Driving through Quebec a few years ago I saw one of those towing a good sized four wheeler.

It’s rated for 1.500kg over here, not bad for a car under 100hp

What did they drive before? This is recent-ish, somewhat decent and you didn’t pay overly much, but it doesn’t get any more boring.

Indeed, it’s nothing exciting.

It’s replacing a forrest green 306 wagon, which is a bit more interesting but has a lot of issues. It was a work car, and lived a hard life.

Their main car is an equally boring Mazda 5, but my brother in law in currently restoring his old 2CV Charleston

The 306 is getting on in age, so if it’s led a hard life than I can imagine it’s coming to its end. Too bad though, they were great cars for those with a low budget. Probably drives more dynamically than that Hyundai too.

They’ve had it for about 14 years.

It was already on it’s way to the junkyard when they picked it up. It had thrown a rod through the engine wall, and was a bit rough.

My dad put a used engine in it. That was about 200.000km ago I think. It cost them next to nothing over the years.
