And a question. Now with two dogs

Kinja'd!!!

After inspecting the roof panel it looks like a good sand, seal and paint is all that’s needed. Hooray! Also two of the four welds that hold the heat shield to my high-flow cat have popped, leaving a nasty rattle. The original heat shield is still attached to the body, can I remove the shield on the cat, or should I find a way to re-attach it?

Rip it off and then try not to drive through any big piles of leaves.

FWIW, when the welds started to break on my Mustang’s heat shields, I just ran a big hose clamp around to hold them to the cats. But some cars have big heat shields that don’t touch the exhaust at all; they’re just fastened to the body . What does yours look like?

It has a heat shield attached to the body, an upper welded to the cat, no lower

If the original is intact, I’d probably just rip the other one off.

Kinja'd!!!

The one by the rear passenger O2 sensor? Fuck it, pop rivet that bitch back in to place.

Edit: I also saw you are in the market for an unbroken dash pad. That will be a rarity as they basically came pre-broken from the factory. Maybe try wrapping the existing one with sheet vinyl like you’d use on a door panel.

Yeah that one. The problematic one though is welded to the cat, not attached to the body. I don’t think pop rivets would withstand that kind of heat...?

The bottom doesn’t even have a shield

Only place I’ve used them on exhaust is on the muffler of my pressure washer and they did OK there. Eventually if you throw an aftermarket exhaust on it you may just want to ditch it.

It’s already got aftermarket. Looks like 3" all the way, high-flow cats, I think a Flowmaster muffler and big ol’ “titanium” blued tips

Leaves getting trapped between the cat and the underbody is what I was referring to.

Ah. See I wasn’t sure which is why it took me so long to reply because I could take it two ways and apparently I chose poorly

Yeah that could be a problem. I’m still trying to work out the best course of action :\

My current exhaust has no heat shield on the top. I pulled the heat shield off my dad’s tundra 4 years ago and we pulled the one on my buddy’s civic as well. I would think that as long as the body shield is there you will be fine.

If you can drill holes in the shield to hold it tight, you may be able to use stainless seizing wire to hold it tight.

Thanks bud. Yeah I may see if I can get holes drilled but in all honesty I’m not particularly worried about keeping the shield at this point

Dump it. I think that was really only needed with the stock flat cat.

I wouldn’t be either. That car is going to be fun. Good luck with it!

I think I’m going to keep it since the problem shield is the one welded to the cat.

Holy shit. I’m an idiot. This whole time I thought you meant the one attached to the body. Serves me right for 4 hours sleep.

If it rattles do the hose clamp thing or just wrap some wire around it tightly.

They sell steel rivets but they are kinda a bitch to pop.
