I thought the restriction was based on build date? As in a car built Jan 1, 1993 would be legal for import in two days, but a car built Feb 12, 1993 won’t be legal for import until February.

Prototypes aren’t given VIN normally... Not sure how it works to figure out build dates for EU cars... in Japan it’s fairly easy and takes 30s, but I’ve never tried with EU made cars...

First cars seem to have hit the showroom floors in April 1993... I doubt they’ve been parked for 4 months before being actually sold. My guess is that the first ones were made in mid-February or March...

If I am wrong though, I don’t think I am but misinformation is a bitch, then we’ll see. This countdown is more symbolic than anything, just stating that 2018 is the year it’s happening.

Not 1/93, 4/93. The car began sales in April.

And as Flavien said, there are prototypes from 1992 anyway.

So, the book source I have details every car on sale in a given year.

The Twingo started appearing in the 1993 book (1994MY).

Annoyingly, the books only have sales records of individual models from 1975-1991. ...But the 1993 book gave me another lead. The Twingo was first tested by the journalists who wrote the book in ‘24/92'. I’m assuming this was the 24th December 1992, which proves that there were press cars available in late ‘92 , even if sales only began the following year. That’s some of the mystery solved, merci Twingo.
