In a move that shows that a) VW still doesn’t get the NA market and b) they fell they have to fill a void left by the Touareg leaving this market, Car & Driver is reporting that a coupe like variant of the Atlas is coming. No one asked for this and to highlight again that VW doesnt get us: why ruin the roominess of the Atlas by adding a variant that cuts down on both cargo capacity and interior room?

Why? Why would you want that? But this makes me wonder how well that Evoque convertible is selling

BMW and MB sell every awkward coupe CUV they can build, VW has embraced upmarket aspirations for eons, voila.

Not well I would imagine. But sadly you cant find figures on individual models.

I dont get why they do either. Its like if you want to move up market, then ditch Audi.

By “coupe” do they mean 2-door Tahoe-like or something else?

True. But no one asked VW to do it. And no one wants them to move up market either.

No they mean what coupe means now: rakish cut into head room roofline and 4 doors.

Is this supposed to be competition for the upcoming Bronco?

I disagree. This is smart, if they price it right. They’ll sell plenty of them to idiots.

I am surprised Audi isn’t in that game yet, while MB and BMW try to out-niche each other in every segment.

I think in spite of the “coupe” wording, this won’t necessarily be an Atlas SHIT . The C&D link mentions that the Atlas was previewed by the CrossBlue concept, and there was also a CrossBlue Coupe concept that wasn’t all that coupe-y.

Sure the roofline is a bit lower and the hatch is more raked, but it’s still plenty upright and boxy.

The Atlas is 13 inches longer, 6 inches wider and 5 inches taller than the new long-wheelbase Tiguan, so presumably there’s some room to slot a model in between them.

Whether that makes sense to do when most of the mainstream brands have largely ditched midsize 5-seat crossovers for “compact” almost-midsize and 3-row crossovers is another question.

The Ford Edge and Nissan Murano are the only mainstream midsize CUVs left, and I suppose we can count the Subaru Outback for this purpose even if it’s a wagon.

The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a “midsize” in the Hyundai lineup, but that’s more because the Tucson is on the small end of the compact segment and some of the “compacts” like the Tiguan are within an inch or two of the SFS.

Come to think about it, Cadillac needs to have coupe versions of the Trax, Encore, Envision, and the Suburban, fast.

I thought the Atlas was downmarket from regular VWs like the Golf? It being so cheap(ly built) is a main reason it’s not being offered in Europe.

I dont even remember that coupe concept. I still see it as an answer to a question no one asked VW to answer. Rakish roof or not, its pretty much going to be a 2 row SUV thats the same size as the Toureg but cheaper, while being in a weird spot inbetween the 3 row Tiguan and the bigger Atlas.

Its very cheap inside. The pics make it look nicer than it is. But it isnt being offered in the EU because they are getting the next gen Toureg and the Atlas was designed for the US which is why its so huge.

At least VW is finally getting crossovers into the US market. If that means better GTIs in the future, I’m ok with that
