Dealer loaner while my Forester gets aligned after the great curb impact of 2K17. I’m back at work so I might not answer all that quickly. First impressions are mostly good. Fit and finish is nice, ride/handling balance isn’t quite VW but above average for the class. Could use more power.

I am really impressed with those new Imprezas. Not a bad place to be at all and I would seriously consider one with the six speed.

How is the general operation and smoothness of the infotainment? The screen in my wife’s 2016 Impreza is hot garbage. The only thing good about it is you can update the navigation maps for free by hooking the built-in microSD card up to your computer. Except even with current mapping data, my wife (justifiably) hates the navigation and uses Google Maps on her phone instead.

Unfortunately, the Impreza is still soldiering on with the old 5-speed unit. Oddly, despite being nearly identical in every other way, the Crosstrek gets the 6-speed for some reason. Maybe next year the Impreza will be bumped to the 6-speed? I have the 6-speed in my Forester and it really makes a difference over the 5-speed in day-to-day usability.

Probably something to do with gear ratios and trying to get the even piggier Crosstrek moving.

I just had a rental for a week. Was really crossing my fingers that it would be a Subaru but it was a Hyundai Elantra. Much disappointment was had especially since we put 2200 miles on it.

Low range. Something USDM Subaru’s lost in the 80’s.

Ye’, could be, it is all wheel drive.

Didn’t think it would be in a 1.6i petrol hatchback.

I could have sworn the Impreza got the 6 for 2018 and the 5 is completely retired at this point.

How much legroom is there in the back bench? A family member owns an ‘09 and it’s quite roomy.

Not sure. I’ve seen a few around town with fleet plates, but those could be owned by a company for private use.

Maybe. The Impreza has held weight constant this generation as has the Crosstrek. The Crosstrek only adds around 130 lbs. to the Impreza weight so it shouldn’t be a huge issue, but the complaints seem louder about the Crosstrek. Maybe it is that the smaller crossover things the Crosstrek competes with tend to have more power than the compact sedans they are based on.

I thought so too but according to Subaru’s website and one 2018 5-door sitting my dealer’s lot that isn’t the case.

Yep it’s the dual-range transmission selector. We don’t get it in the US, but I think most other markets it is at least an option.

Sorry. Come to think of it, I haven’t seen a Subaru in a rental fleet in recent memory. I think the AWD and associated maintenance scares them a bit. I’m not a fan of the current Hyundai’s. The best compact rental I’ve had recently is a Jetta from Enterprise. They are really nice now that they have an independent rear suspension again.

So... it’s not the worst I’ve used, but responsiveness could be better. There is a bit of a lag between touch and response, but it does seem to register every touch at least. The few menus that require finger-drag scrolling aren’t very smooth. Oddly the radio changes volume and presets pretty instantly when you use the physical controls rather than the touch screen but lags when you push the preset buttons on the screen - so it must be the touch controller. The info screen up on the top of the dash and the one between the gauges change quickly in response to the steering wheel buttons as well. Aside from the touch lag, the infotainment system is well laid out with big buttons and easy-to-find options. Although the screen is pretty big and bright (has to be at least 7" - photo dump coming later) and there is an H/K branded sound system, this model appears to not have Navigation at all. I think for 2018 they support CarPlay (and maybe Android Auto as well) so maybe they just pushed Nav off to the phones for good.

It is not fast. It feels somewhat responsive from a stop due to the CVT being able to gear really low, but it runs out of steam quick. I did find myslef cruising along IH10 at 80 MPH with the flow of traffic, though, so it is happy to hold highway speeds... but not really pass at them. There is seriously too much of a gap between the 152 hp in this and the 268 in the Outback. I’m mystified as to why they don’t at least offer either the 175 hp FB25 out of the Forester/Outback or the 200 hp FA20 out of the BRZ. The Sport 5-door is $22,600 while the WRX starts at $27,000. A 200 hp 5-door Impreza for $24,000 would be a nice sweet spot.

I wouldn’t really call it sporty, but it is definitely on the sportier end of the compact segment. Steering weight is great, but that is pretty much a Subaru hallmark IMO. It’s more Jetta/Mazda3 than an Elantra/Sentra. Leg/shoulder room up front is pretty good. This generation at least feels like it has more shoulder room.

Visibility is good up front and poor out the sides and back. So basically the same as all new compacts. The blind spot warning is one of the better that I’ve used and helps a lot. Wouldn’t recommend getting as base model without it. Ride is better than expected with these tires. It’s not GTI voodoo magic where the ride is perfect despite the complete lack of sidewall, but then again it costs almost $5k less and has AWD.

I’m 6'2" and legroom behind me is good enough to spend some time in. Back bench is surprisingly comfy. Oddly no center armrest at least in this trim. I’ll post a photo when I dump them later.

This will not be attempted on the loaner lol. It does have the distance-based cruise control to follow other cars. I haven’t tried it here but I have used it on an Outback and it worked well there.

I’m 6'2" and headroom is good. This one has the sunroof that clips some out and I still have at least an inch above me. The windshield seems to stop low, though. I kept looking up to see headliner where I’d still see glass in my Foz.

I was thinking more along the lines of tire diameter, more work to get it rolling. I didn’t realize they were that close in weight.

So I may not be the best judge because I’m 6'2"-150 but there seemed like plenty of room. I mean it’s obviously not F-150 seats, but the bolsters weren’t even close to tight on me.

Fantastic luck with genetics I guess. My dad’s side of the family are all beanpoles. I’ve been known to throw down hideous amounts of brisket and beer from time to time but the worst that happens is my gut puffs up some. Highest I’ve ever been is 175. I do try to keep portions under control and stay active. I go for a 2-3 mile run twice a week (Mon/Wed) with the occasional 5k or 5 mile race thrown in and bike a 6 mile paved/trail loop twice a week (Tue/Fri) and try to add a 10-20 mile ride on the weekend if the weather is good. On the flip side, I can’t add upper body muscle. I’ve tried lifting a few times and gotten nowhere. I can barely do more than 2 or 3 pull-ups and even with training I haven’t been able to ever get over that up.
