I don’t think it’s possible short of using “creative” means. Any three odd numbers added together will always result in another odd number.

By creative means, you could write the 9 upside down. It becomes a 6, which can be added with 11 and 13 to give you 30. But of course, that isn’t a true way to solve it.

Maybe something using exponents? It doesn’t say you can’t use them. Actually, I’m not sure you can’t use fractions, for that matter.

Edit: I think you could solve it of you take the parentheses and commas to be set notation.

15 + 15 + (3 , 3) = 30

Where (3 , 3) is the empty set? I never took set theory, so I’m not sure if I’m actually allowed to do that.

What about leaving a box blank, and adding 15+15?

Is India one of those places that uses commas where we use periods in numbers, e.g. To indicate decimals?

Also what are the rules? One number per box? Can they be exponents?

To answer your question about the commas, no I’m pretty sure India uses commas as we do.

it says ‘fill in the boxes using... (numbers)‘ so leaving a box blank wouldn’t be filling in the boxes

You can’t possibly add 3 odd numbers and get an even number as a result. There has to be a trick.

Using non-trick solutions;

There is no solution to this question using normal methods, as three odd numbers added together will always produce an odd number ( Is it possible for an odd number of odd numbers to be added together to create an even number? ). Since the answer is even, and an odd number can not equal an even number, this is unsolvable.

Using trick solutions;

Use the factorial function in your answer: 11 + 3! (1*2*3, which equals 6) + 13 = 30

Change the mathematical base system of the equation in certain places (this can give an answer with multiple bases or a single base): For single bases: ..For multiple bases... 910+910+910=309 9 10 + 9 10 + 9 10 = 30 9 . A number which appears as “30" when written in a different base system doesn’t represent “thirty” in base ten. When written in base 9 as 309 30 9 , is equivalent to twenty seven in base ten: (2710 27 10 ). Or using all the same base: 135+115+15=305 13 5 + 11 5 + 1 5 = 30 5 in base five, which is equivalent to (810+610+110=1510) ( 8 10 + 6 10 + 1 10 = 15 10 ) in base ten. Or 139+159+19=309 13 9 + 15 9 + 1 9 = 30 9 in base nine.

Use the commas given in the question to your advantage: In many countries the comma (,) is used instead of the full stop (.) to represent a decimal point. For example “3.5" (three and a half) can be written as “3,5". This allows for the solution 11,3 + 15,7 + 3 = 30.

Only use numbers in two of the brackets: You could leave one of the brackets blank and have the answer as () + (15) + (15) = 30. The first fifteen represents a fifteen with a “unary plus” (+15) and the second fifteen added to the first one gives us thirty. The first bracket is left empty.

Rotate one of the accepted numbers so that it resembles a different number: If the number 9 is rotated 180 degrees then it can resemble the number 6. 6 (an upside down number “9") + 9 + 15 = 30.

Upon googling, it seems that SmugAardvark is right. No solutions that aren’t “creative”, and depending on the version, one creative solution may be expected.

I think we can solve this doing accounting math.

15 + 15 + (1) = 30

The parenthesis acts as a negative.

Edit: I’m an idiot. That gives us 29.

I know it says fill the boxes but that is not mathematically impossible. All numbers supplied are odd numbers. The answer is an even number. With three numbers to add you have odd + odd +odd. Two odd numbers always equals an even number. An even number plus an odd number always equals an odd number, thus with three of the supplied numbers added together the number will never be 30. The only way to solve it is to ignore the directions and write 15 + 15.

So the answer using the 9 as a 6 seems the most viable and in line with what the parameters of the problem state. I mean, is it a nine or is it a six pictured in the question? So I could see that being used as a viable answer.
