Long Front Overhang is becoming a problem.

Exhibit A: Jeep Cherokee 3/4 front view

Kinja'd!!!

When the new Cherokee debuted, I was not in love with the design direction. I will admit, its weirdness has grown on me, but the one unforgivable sin has to be the enormous front overhang.

Exhibit B: Jeep Cherokee side view

Kinja'd!!!

There is so much mass in front of the front axle, not only does it negatively affect the aesthetic profile, there are real world physical consequences to this overhang.

As I was walking my dog this morning, a neighbor was backing her Cherokee down the driveway (typical suburban 5%-8% slope toward street), and the front fascia scraped in her way down.

Her vehicle is not modified in any way. It’s not a Trailhawk model, and judging by the badging, likely FWD. This vehicle is the very ideal of the CUV craze; it defines the term “crossover”. How in the hell should a Jeep, of all brands, find itself unable to traverse a typical suburban driveway without scraping?

Note: I realize, of course, that increasing front overhangs are a result of more stringent pedestrian safety standards.

See, on sports cars I kinda get it: they’re not meant for everyday utilitarian usage, and aesthetically there’s a context there.

I suppose its a thing of packaging; there’s a bunch of new cars with really small overhangs and it doesn’t necessarily have to be about pedestrian safety.

The modern Cherokee is an affront to everything Jeep. It’s barely even capable of soft-roading, given how many of the damn things I’ve seen being completely incapable of handling even a wintry Maine road.

And it’s about as ugly as a Hyundai Kona.

Jeep and Land Rover made their own demise by popularizing SUVs so much that most people buy them for city driving or never off roading. Imagine being a Jeep/LR engineer and having to deal with cost/design/economy constraints while also adding off-road capacity that competitors like Kia or Porsche and Audi don’t give a shit about. SUVs have become Jacks of all trades.

So Jeep and LR find themselves against a wall; make the SUV too off-roady and no one buys it because its too inefficient/ugly/expensive or make the SUV work as a city car and dare anger the old jeep folk.

The Renegade is a step in the right direction, IMO. It doesn’t abuse one of the familiar Jeep names, and helps feed the bottom line for off-roaders that people go to Jeep for. The Wrangler is all but untouchable. FCA is pretty much forced to keep it one way or nobody will buy it because word of mouth is extremely powerful.

That’s what happens when you try to make the front of a car pointed. Overhang for days.

I say keep making the fake Jeeps for the J. Crew crowd as long as you keep building these pieces of shit for people like me.

What’s this “overhang” you speak of? Is it like a winch?

One of the reasons I didn’t like my Camaro; The poorly executed design took precedence over the cooling system.

I lived thru the 90s, thru the Daimler-Chrysler “cab-forward” phase. I realize that long front overhangs are nothing new. In context, it makes sense.

On a Jeep product, a long front overhang should not be a concern. On a “baby-SUV”, “cute-ute”, “lifted hatchback” design, it should not be a concern. That’s what I’m getting at.

Because racecar. It at least makes sense why there’s so much overhang here.
