The number one thing I keep hearing from people nowadays in regards to electric cars, is that they’re just way too practical to catch on. So what if we strip away some of the space and practicality that Tesla and other EV manufacturers are trying to create? Well we end up with the car America has been waiting for, the Kei-V.

What the hell is a Kei-V you ask? Well you simply take the best parts about a Kei car (i.e. cheap, light weight, compact, energy efficient, minimalist design, etc.) and the best parts about an EV (i.e. instant torque, low center of gravity, minimal maintenance, tax credits, etc.) and you combine them! Thus you have a cheap, light, quick EV with brilliant handling characteristics and a very low cost of ownership.

Some have been already for sale. My brother currently even owns one. It’s a Peugeot iOn (shown below) which is badge engineered Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Also a Citroën version existed (C-Zero). These were based on a Mitsubishi i kei car. The empty weight did rise with ~200 kg and the nose was slightly lengthened to make it pass European safety legislation.

The US version is much larger as they enlarged the whole body in every direction. It didn’t sell very well.

Still, the US version is pretty damn small for a car for this market.

As far as I’m aware, general consensus in the American EV community is that it’s a car that needed to die, because it perpetuated the “golf cart” myth. (That is, that EVs are merely “boring golf carts”, not “real cars” - this wasn’t helped by the prevalence of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles, which were 25 mph max, and many were actually golf carts modified by their manufacturers to do 25 instead of 20. (Most of the rest were modified L6e light quadricycles with a bunch of lead-acid batteries and a golf cart motor, instead of the typical 400-500 cc diesel.))

Damn it, man. Stop posting vehicles that make me start searching to see if there are any for sale in Okinawa. It never ends well.

If we’d gotten this version with about double and a half the battery size and 100 lbs lighter then maybe it would’ve been a different story. It’s a bit too MP-V looking though so it was kinda doomed from the onset here. What we need is something a bit more shooting brake style!

An electrified Suzuki Cappucino style car should be a very fun option too.

If I buy a car from the mainland again, I really want to drive it down to the ferry and take a short cruise. Though I have a feeling that is much more complicated than I would expect it to be given how much goes into getting a car registered in this country.

I’m digging this idea, but what about safety?
