Kinja'd!!!

Now, I know fruit-cakes are a common seasonal treat in the US and this is kinda close to it, but better.

Panettone is an italian type of sweet bread enjoyed during the festive season. It is made during a long process that involves curing the dough, which is acidic, similar to sourdough. The proofing process alone takes several days, giving the cake its distinctive fluffy characteristics. It contains candied orange, citron, and lemon zest, as well as raisins, which are added dry and not soaked. Many other variations are available such as plain or with chocolate

This is a chocolate hazelnut Panettone, one weighting 1Kg.

Kinja'd!!!

The packaging was very nice, matte finish and bow thing made it look a lot classier than this thing actually is.

Kinja'd!!!

The Chocolate hazelnut was good, didn’t taste like Nutella, seemed hand-made.

Dough was nice and fluffy, nice.

Hands are sticky with chocolate.

8/10

I see these pop up in stores around Christmastime here, usually either with chocolate or fruits. They look much less awful than fruitcake but I have yet to try one.

It’s out of stock here with no price but this other 1 kg panettone from the same company is R$ 54,90 which at today’s exchange rate is $16.63 USD.

But that’s the normal one, this one comes in the fancy round matte box, the only other one available in a similar box is $36, so I’m guessing this was the same.

Fruitcakes are terrible sweet bricks. Panettone is doughy chocolaty deliciousness.

That’s one fancy-ass panettone. Also, FWIW, fruit cake is very different as it consists primarily of candied fruit and little or no dough.

My wife must have panettone with butter and either coffee or hot chocolate during the holidays or else she’s not happy. Her mother used to make them at her home bakery. Fortunately we can find them easily, usually $8 for a kilo.

Panettones are great as long as you get the chocolate ones. The fruit ones are meh unless you toast and butter them for breakfast.

This one was $36, but I got it as a gift from a client. Are panettones common in the US? I also eat them with butter and coffee in the morning, it’s like toast from heaven.

I made a buche de Noel in high school for a French class holiday party. Hard to make but darn tasty. They made it sound like every french family in the country made a buche de Noel for Christmas.

Buche de Noel huh, I remember seeing it once in Switzerland when I spent christmas there a couple years ago, but I don’t think it is that common.

Fruit cake is also not common in the US, maybe in Canada but those guys are strange.

The only American fruitcake I’ll touch is Icebox Fruitcake, which is mostly just condensed milk and candied fruits. It more like a white fudge. Not that horrid brown rum-flavored nastiness...ugh.

Panettoni and pandori seem common around here in the Northeastern US, typically imported from Italy with very few exceptions (e..g, D’Onofrio, which come from Peru).

I am fairly certain I have never seen anyone give anyone fruitcake...

You don’t gift fruitcake, you pass it along from generation to generation.

Any Panettone I have ever had has always been as dry as a bone. Have I always just had bad ones, or are they all that dry?

I think you just had bad ones. Panettones are not supposed to be crumbly, this one was very soft and the Chocolate-Hazelnut kept it kinda moist.

Panettone is awful. It’s one of those things people only eat because it’s a tradition.
