I can fit back there, and I am not small.

It’s techically a perfect car for three people and a doggo. Or three people and a luggage. Or three people and groceries. Or two people, a doggo, and a luggage. Or two people, a doggo, and groceries. Or two people, groceries, and luggage. Or two people and two doggos. Or one people and three doggos. Or no people and four doggos.

A few more fun facts.

- It uses centre take-off steering gear.

- The fuel tank is flat & under the cabin floor.

- The rear shocks are on an angle so they encroach less in to the rear passenger area.

- The differential  is in-front of the engine.

- The dash board is asymmetrical to optimize interior space.

I did know that. The head custodian at my school drives one. She loves it.

Note that this technically means that it’s front-mid-engine - more than half of the engine, including the entire crankshaft, is behind the front axle centerline.

Yep!

I would actually be interested in an iQ (or even better, a Cygnet!) if the following changes were made:

1: Fix the awkward styling The newest Smart ForTwo is actually decent-looking, and there’s no reason Toyota couldn’t have done something similar especially with the longer and larger body.

2: Shrink the wheels down an inch or two but keep the same overall wheel/tire diameter, because sidewalls are your friends, especially in the city, where they were designed to inhabit.

3: Make the rear seats optional or entirely removable in seconds to expose a simple floor. This way they could be more flexible, e.g. Food delivery, moving big dogs, grocery runs, courier services, etc.

4: Make an EV or mild-hybrid version. I know it’d be a tight fit, but if you do #3 and expand the rear area, it might work.

Now, as for debateable improvements, I’d like them to have explored rear-hinged doors (more natural arm movement) or sliding doors like that European hatchback Top Gear tested years ago - I think it was one of the French brands? - to make city parking even easier. Also a high-performance version to go against the 500 Abarth would be neat.

True Story: I made my kids sit in the back seats of all the smallest cars including the iQ at the local auto show one year. Except the BRZ, it was brand new and they didn’t have it open.

The Mini was the roomiest:

I own a 2012, it’s an amazing little car. (I owned another 2012, then traded it in on a tacoma... then when i realized that I don’t need a truck, I went back. Love the little bugger!

Nice! Our custodian’s other car is a big Merc coupe of some sort. I honestly can’t remember the last time she drove that instead of the iQ.
