I was on the interstate recently — 4 lanes each direction. I kid you not, there were three effing semis in three separate lanes and a box truck in the fourth (the box truck was at least in the rightmost lane). I’d never seen a rolling roadblock in person before, but that’s what this was.

I once listened to an interview with a trucker on the radio that was supposed to give some insight into their day to day life. And they took listener questions and the person calling in asked, “why do two trucks block the highway for miles sometimes when one is trying to pass another.” To which the truck replied “oh I’ve never seen something like that.” I couldn’t believe he could bald face lie like that. At least the truck slow pass usually involves constant speeds. Around here, the majority of the cars will actually slow down to draw out the pass a long as possible, then speed up once they are by. It is as if the drivers think passing too quickly is somehow dangerous. In reality, spending longer side by side (with less escape routes) is actually increasing the overall risk.

The Germans (delightfully) call this situation Elefantenrennen (“elephant racing”). When normal cars do it, I call it the “Oregon maneuver,” because every single time I drive in Oregon I am dismayed anew at being repeatedly obstructed by idiots doing 5 under in the passing lane while passing more idiots doing 10 under in the right. Plus, the speed limits are all absurdly low to begin with.
I’m a pretty even-keeled person but seeing the rare passing lanes on a 2-lane highway abused in this fashion over and over again will drive anyone into a rage. Yes, I was in Oregon for the Christmas long weekend, why do you ask?
