I daily a high powered rear wheel drive car, even up to the mountain to snowboard. Does that count? Probably not, so no. But it sounds awesome!

I was planning on doing some ice racing on New Year’s Eve, but there isn’t enough ice on the lake, so the event has been cancelled :( Hoping there will be enough ice for the next event on the 14th.

Yep, I love ice racing events... not HPDE/wheel-to-wheel, more like ice autocross. I’m guessing that’s what you’re referring to, since most of the head-to-head ice events I see these days are snowmobiles and motorcycles.
E: I realize now you might actually be referring to ice HPDEs, as in ice driving education events... I’ve never done one of those, but I’d love to get out there in someone else’s car!
I love them. Some of the most fun you can have in a car, and it’s cheap. Events around here tend to be about 25-50% cheaper than an autocross event (usually $30-40 to sign up), and you get bundles of seat time. And no working course! (Usually).
I’ve also done a “winter autocross” event on an icy road course, but that was so sketchy I didn’t go back. Once cars wore through the ice, you were just chewing up tires anyway.
Costs overall are lower, too. You’re pretty much just paying for gas, since there isn’t a ton of other wear. Studded tires are fun, but they scare me a bit. I’ve autocrossed on crummy all-seasons before, and it feels just like that. I’d rather be slidey than super fast, anyway. Slidey can be fast and fun - I won 2 of the 3 events I went to last year.

Awesome! Thanks for the detailed response. Yeah I’m open to any form of driving on a frozen lake. That is the main attraction. I bet the Miata is great! Super light.

I’m in Denver. The ice racing happens in Georgetown, up in the mountains at 8,530 feet above sea level. We’ve had an unusually warm season so far this year.

random, but I’m going snowboarding for the first time on Friday. Any advice for a newbie? I spent most of my childhood/teen years on a skateboard, so I’m hoping that’ll at least help my balance.

Oh jeez it’s been years since I taught anyone.
Always stay on an edge, never ride flat bottom. Doesn’t mean you need to pick the edge way up, just keep your weight to one side at least, heel or toe.
Relax, and keep your knees bent. And relax.
Most people I’ve taught either stand too straight or crouch too much and keep all of their weight way way back. Just keep your weight slightly back and your knees slightly bent.
Your front foot is your pivot point or fulcrum, use your back foot to turn.
If you’re sliding the board towards the toe side, lift the toe edge, and vice versa.
I never got the hang of skateboarding, so I can’t tell you how that might help. But hopefully all of this does! Maybe watch some YouTube videos also?

Thanks a lot! I’ll keep all that in mind. I’m gonna watch a few videos tonight before I go to bed. Really hoping I pick it up, all the friends I’m going with have been boarding for around a year now, so they’re better than me but still not great. It’ll just be annoying if I’m stuck on the rookie slopes all day and can’t enjoy it with friends.

Went way better than I thought! Picked it up decently well, the only thing I had trouble with was carving with my toes. For some reason I just could not get a solid grasp on that. Oh well, that’s an excuse to go again soon! Went off some blue slopes and had a blast.
